Had my blood tests taken just before Christmas and went back today for the results. My GP was really pleased with my results - HbA1c was 36 (in new money) approx 5.44% down from 38 or 5.6% in April, Cholesterol was 3.0, blood pressure and kidney function normal.

I don't think many of his diabetic patients get as good results as mine. I said it was mainly down to cutting out wheat things and not eating potatoes (don't like rice or pasta so I don't eat those either).

I never have my blood tests done fasting (never been told to), so this time there was a 7.4 mmol/L - so presume this would be a fasting level execpt that it was after breakfast. As I didn't know what levels I'd been diagnosed at in 2007, I asked to have a look (he did offer to print them, but then admitted with their new computer system he didn't know how to :?: ).

At the time of diagnosis I was drinking nearly a litre of sweet fizzy drink per day. The first HbA1c came out at 7.7% but the other measurement (non fasting) was 17.7 mmol/L. I was very anaemic at this time, so would this affect the HbA1c? Otherwise to me it doesn't make sense as I wasn't having hypos.

HbA1c history
Diagnosis November 2007 7.7%
January 2008 7.5%
January 2009 7.0%
Janurary 2010 7.4%
Spring 2010 - very bad control, if test had been done, probably would have been 9.0%
August 2010 - 6.4%
December 2010 - 6.0%
April 2011 - 5.6%
December 2011 - 5.4%

I'm so glad I found this forum, I had no idea about carbs.

You only need a fasting blood test for a lipid profile Denise which breaks your total cholesterol down to trigs, hdl and ldl but with your total cholesterol at 3.0 your GP probably thinks it unnecessary.

Not sure what you mean by "so this time there was a 7.4 mmol/L - so presume this would be a fasting level execpt that it was after breakfast" was this a finger prick test or an HbA1c test? You mention your latest A1c is 5.4% so I assume it was a finger prick test so not really sure what you are asking???
