Hi all,

I had a mamoth reading session this weekend reading through all the posts on this forum and have decided to give low-carbing a try. They have one of Dr. Bernstein's books at the library (Diabetes diet) so as soon as it's available I'll read it.

I'm a member of Tesco's online diet tracker and so I had a look to see how many carbs I've been eating. It averaged on 300g a day!! I've cut back considerably in the last few days and I'm now eating around 180g which I know is still classed as high but I'm getting there!

I'm actually a bit underweight so I'm not doing this to lose weight, just to regulate my blood sugar. It's not horrendous but I'm finding it increasingly hard to control and I suspect that my honeymoon period is finally over.

I have my next hba1c in 3 months time, so I'd really like to surprise the nurse and get it below 6%. My current cholesterol levels are fine, so with an increase in fats, it will be a real tester to see what happens.

Carol ..... as you say you are underwieght control by using the Lo GI method might be more appropriate for you. I am a T2 on lo carb and one of the things is that lo carb almost certainly will lose more wieght, which i needed to do.

The lo Gi method is more aligned towards foods that dont spike the BS
There are quite a few on here doing similar

Hi Dave, Too late!!! I'm loving my new diet. I thought I'd do it slowly but I've been feeling so much better that I've virtually eliminated starchy foods from my diet already.

I've been on a low GI diet since becoming diabetic. It worked initially but I'm finding it increasingly harder to control my bg. I've also been feeling very ill lately (fatigue and a really weird not well feeling) and all tests at the doctors came back normal so after reading everything on here, I thought a change in diet could help.

I weigh myself most days so I'll monitor it. If I eat enough fat, then I'm sure I won't lose any more weight. It's kinda weird to get my head round the fact that fat isn't bad for you. I've been enjoying strawberries and cream all week..

Carol, yes the fat protien ratio was something i discovered only recently due to someone else who was underwieght T2 and was losing weight. If weight loss does occur you have a couple of options:
1. increase carbs + increase BS
2. Lower fat intake and increase Protien, since Approx 58% of protien will
convert to glucose in the absence of Carbs. But wont hit your BS as much

Thanks Dave. I read that today actually but it didn't really sink in, so yeah if I start losing weight, I could try eating a bit more protein or carbs.

Did the online tracker again and what I ate today was carbs=133g, protein=73g, and fat 108g. I've still a way to go with the carbs yet. Does anyone know what I should be aiming for? I'm 5 foot 7 and currently weigh around 56kg. Going off what I've read I'm thinking I should be eating 60g protein, 150-210g fat and 30-50g carbs.

Carol its very much trial and error, try something for a week keep a record see what happens. Let your BS numbers be your guide.

Okay thanks, will do.

Just one more question (for now anyway :) ), as my carbs decrease, I take it that fat increases in proportion. How do I work out how much fat to eat in relation to the carbs? If you're eating say 100g of carbs, how much fat should you eat?

Just add butter and cream whenever and you should be OK
