Hi - well thats me with my first box of Metformin and my aspirin!! Just diagnosed about 2 months ago and have been drastically changing my way of eating - and to be honest I think I'm enjoying making new food etc. Still crave my Blue Ribband every now and again!! Just received my medication today and was blown over when I read you can't drink alcohol! Does this mean that you can't even have a glass of red wine with a meal anymore?????

According to the blurb that came with the box you can't have any - oh no!!!

Hi Highlandlassie and welcome.

I think the makers of metformin take the view that if they say no alcohol then they can't be sued if anything goes wrong! The advice on both patient.co.uk and netdoctor.co.uk (both independent and run by medical professionals) is not to drink excessive amounts of alcohol. An odd glass of wine shouldn't do you any harm unless there is another medical condition that would make wine inadvisable.

Cheers.

Hi Highland lass...I was the same. diagnosed in January and my birthday in February. I panicked and thought that if i had one drink i would die  Took advice off here and scarily went out with my mates for a drink and armed with my testing kit. My blood sugar did go down but not enough to panic and I had alcohol then a soft drink etc. I also have a glass of red with my meals so all is not lost.

Thanks for the advice - I usually share a bottle of red with my other half on a Saturday night - so was panicking that this was never to happen again!!! I have Type 2 and don't have any testing to do (well not at the moment anyway) ... but I am quite happen that 2 glasses of red won't see me off!!!??? thanks again

For most of us, a glass or two of wine is good. But if you're Type 2, you should be testing, else you won't know what's happening with your blood sugar and what in particular makes it spike - so do ask your doctor for a meter and test strips.

They might say no, but press the point - it is important.
