I just want to say hello to everyone here; my name is Debbie and I was diagnosed in June 2008.
Interestingly I had no symptoms of diabetes and the problem was first picked up when I went to see my rheumatologist who asked for a urine sample. Anyway he detected sugar in the sample and sent me for blood tests which showed I had diabetes 2.
My fasting blood glucose was 13 but since then my glucose levels have been round about the 7 mark. I have lost weight and my cholestrol levels which were very slightly raise have come down and I feel fine and I'm looking foward to getting to know you.

Welcome to the forum Debbie.have a good look round and ask us questions if you have any.there's always someone with an answer.

Thank you and I have been looking at some of the other forums and it's very informative here.
I'm particularly interested in diet management because I have been given pretty confusing information.

Thank you Sandy. My biggest confusion is to do with food I have been told by the diabetes group that starchy carbohydrates are fine in sensible proportions because they keep you satisfied for longer but someone else told me to avoid bread, pasta and potatoes.
I don't eat many potatoes but I do eat bread and pasta and thank goodness my glucose levels have got lower with each blood test I've had!

Hi debbie,
if i eat bread pasta or rice or potatoes, Then i spike so high for up to 6 hours afterwards!
I decided to cheat tonight, I have learnt a lesson! No pizza for me, Bought a 5 inch pizza from domino's I had one slice of pizza, And i have spiked to 14 with in a hour, I am now down to 9!
Oh never again! Thing is all we can all do is to learn what is good and bad for us! What works for one might not work for another!
I low carb, I now eat tops 50 carbs a day! Yes today i cheated! Oh boy not again!
I will write 100 lines i will never cheat again..Lol!
My diabeties nurse and Gp have both said that low carb is working for me and i should stick to it! I have lost alot of weight since feb of this year! I need to lose alot more!
Do you test yourself?
I do i have my own machine, I test between 4 and 8 times a day depends on how i am! I remember asking the Gp for test sticks she said want them on prescription? I answered yes please!
She has told me i should not test less than 4 times a day! I am on diet only!
Sandy

Hi Sandy.
I was advised that I didn't need to test myself as I am not on insulin and so I just have a blood test done once in threee months.
Anyway good luck with losing weight my thoughts are with you I have been battling my weight for years and at the moment it's not too bad but another few pounds off wouldn't hurt!

Hi Debbie
I am on diet and exercise, I have been told that i need to test same as all type 2's do!
Sorry have a few memory probs at mo! Just can't get brain to think at mo!

My doctor is of the opinion that diet alone is not sufficient so I was put straight on medication but I know there are other schools of thought.
I do a fair amount of walking and my work is quite physical.
It's interesting you mention about your memory because I can be talking to someone and then totally forget what I was going to say. It's annoying!

Hi debbie
I always forget my train of thought nowaday's! It is more important that you test if you are on meds! My doctor is behind me testing she says she would rather be safe than sorry!
I often get confused especially when my blood sugars are dropping! i will start talking and then forget what i was talking about!
I would say it is old age creeping in but at 34 not so! I will blame the weather but i like the sun! :D

Congratulations! That's brilliant! I can appreciate and relate too to the amount of information (some of which is conflicting!) you get at first and that can be pretty overwhelming to say the least! Have joined the forum within the last 3 weeks and it's very friendly and welcoming here so feel sure you will find the information and assistance you need!

best wishes, Sue

Does your health practice provide you with testing strips?
Where I go doesn't provide them because they consider that non insulin dependant diabetics don't need them even though that is disputed by others in the medical profession.
I don't get confused when my sugars are dropping but lately I have been feeling light headed and my last blood test showed that my sugar levels had dropped;I was pleased about that but I don't particularly like the slightly dizzy feeling.
I am 10 years older then you and I can't yet claim old age for my memory so I will have to think of another excuse!

Good morning Sue.
I really like the forum,it's good to talk with people who really understand what it's like to have diabetes and who are a very friendly group of people.
I'm glad I finally got round to posting here!
