At the end of January of this year I discovered by a blood test I was a Type 2 diabetic with a reading of 56 HbA1C. I was put on Metformin, I was pretty gutted. I was overweight at 16 stone, aged 70, and I came away from the doctors adamant I would take charge of the rest of my life. I had already read Dr Michael Mosley's book and was sure that he was on to something. My problem was the recipe's. I am not very adventurous with food, I like normal ordinary foods !!! I do not like nuts, do not like seeds and the recipes just didn't do anything for me. I tried some of the baking recipes I saw on the Diet Doctor but didn't like the results. I didn't like the sweeteners so tried to get used to no sugar at all. However, not to be beaten, I bought myself a tracker to record my steps, started swimming twice a week. I walked my elderly dog each day (more of a stroll I am afraid than a walk but I still got the steps in). Only once did I let myself down by eating one chocolate muffin out of a tinfull I had baked for my grandsons. I had no additional sugar, carbs were cut to approx 20 per day. No potatoes, rice, bread etc. I had full fat Greek yoghurt with berries or strawberries and even got used to it. For lunch it would be a salad with ham, egg and cheese. For dinner a home made stir fry of about 5/6 different veg and maybe a chop, salmon, tuna, etc. My only treats were one piece of 84% Chocolate per day. I drank a Gin and bitter lemon (low calorie of course) twice a week. Oh and as my husband loves pork scratchings I would steal 2 pieces !!! Towards the end when the weight started to slow down I tried missing a meal, without being hungry.
Over the next 3 and a half months my weight gradually and regularly fell. I am now 13 stone. At the beginning of this week I had a blood test. Today I have got the results. My HbA1C is 37. I am normal.
I am a recovering diabetic.I know it could come back but I know I must keep the weight off. I am so thrilled and so relieved. This is my big thank you to all of you and your posts, thanks to Dr Michael Mosley for his information. What a wonderful find discovering these pages.
