Antibiotics and glucose levels

Jak's

Member
Morning all, I have got an infection and am on antibiotics, this morning my fasting was 14, never had a reading like that before, I am type 2 and diet controlled, took it again a few minutes ago and it is on its way back down 11 now...

Is this sort of spike fairly normal on meds and with an infection..I was wondering if the Nexus meter I have from the GP might even be faulty.

Thanks for your time reading this and hope someone can offer some advice

A cold or infection can often send BGs higher than usual or expected. Usually only lasts a few days. Just keep an eye on them, it will pass.

Late onset T1, several auto immune issues.
Humalogmix25 twice a day, Methotrexate 25mg once per week, FolicAcid 5mg once per week, prednisolone 5mg daily, Allopurinol 300mg, Calcichew-D3 800iu, Levothyroxine 50mcg, Atenolol 50mg, Losarten 100mg, Aspirin 75mg, Nicorandil 20mg, Nitrolingual GTN spray, Metformin 2000mg, Allimemazine 10mg, Lanzoprazole 30mg, Atorvastatin 20mg, Co Codamol 8/500mg, Depo Medrone (Methylprednisolone) or double Prednisolone for 7 days in case of RA flare.

It also could have been the strip, 98% with +/-20% accuracy.. so it is possible to have the same BG at both tests and get that wild a reading
if you get a reading that doesn't seem right, retest, wash your hands if you haven't already done so

It's the infection that raises your BG. The medication, antibiotics, control the infection and help to bring the BG down. If you do have an infection it will help to be stricter with your diet (fewer carbs) until the infection has passed. You probably won't feel like eating much anyway.
