Consequence of current good weather is being tormented by prickly heat.....so popped an antihistamine about an hour before performing my daily 9am blood test which came up as 8.1

Am hoping someone can tell me if it was the anithistamine.

Thanks.

Hi Hooley,

The active ingredient in Benadryl is diphenhydramine and the advice for diabetics on Drugs.com is:

Diabetes patients - Diphenhydramine/Phenylephrine may affect your blood sugar. Check blood sugar levels closely. Ask your doctor before you change the dose of your diabetes medicine.

Diphenhydramine can have the effect of lowering blood sugar levels, sometimes to hypo levels, and it is recommended the diabetics should never take it without checking with their doctor. You don't say if the reading of 8.1 is unusually high or low.. If it was high it would probably be due to the prickly heat, if it was lower than you expected then probably due to the Benadryl.

I use Loratidine for a recurrent allergy and the only thing I have to do is have liver function tests every now and again. It doesn't affect BG.

Hi Dennis, morning levels are normally under 7, but not by much, so the reading was higher than usual.

Interesting that the prickly heat could have put bg up, wasn't aware of that.

Thanks, only ever take the odd benadryl unless we're abroad when a daily tablet keeps the itches away.......think its a mixture of excema and sweat rash.

i take zirtek daily due to many allergies and its never made any difference :D
