Hi everyone,

I'm T2, currently only taking Alogliptin for this, not very well controlled unfortunately. 6 weeks ago I started experiencing excruciating lower back pain, literally couldn't walk, never experienced anything like it. Was prescribed Tramadol and co-codomol which did nothing except make me feel very ill on top of the pain. Couple of weeks ago GP changed meds over to Gabapentin along with a few other seriously strong painkillers, it's starting to ease off with them and the help of a physiotherapist, but I now have severe constipation because of the amount of strong painkillers I'm taking. It's just not pleasant, can anyone advise of the best foods I can take to help with this, usually I'd go straight to high fibre cereals etc but I know these would do a number on my blood sugars which are already all over the place due to the pain, medications etc. Any advice would be very appreciated, I cannot stomach those sachet things the GP gave me, like trying to drink sea water! Thank you and apologies for the TMI.

Back pain like this is totally miserable @Maggie75 , and you have my full sympathy. I've found chia seeds soaked in water/milk/Greek style yoghurt are good. I'd start with a relatively small amount and build up as necessary. Alternatively lactulose from your dr is also helpful. Nothing like the sachets which made me sick! Hope you feel better soon.

I’ve just had a flare up of my diverticular disease (which rarely happens these days) I used the lactulose that @Hopeful34 recommends as it’s very gentle. It’s very very sweet and not pleasant but it’s only a mouthful, you can add it to drinks if you wish. I took it for about a week and I’m all back to normal now

I tried Inulin, recommended by my dentist (nothing to do with dental treatment). It is a powder which is basically fibre. It certainly helped when I was using Cocodamol for knee, hip and back pain. I put a teaspoon of Inulin in a cup of tea at night and after a couple of days was able to "go" much more easily in the morning. My dentist suggested taking it at night as it does tend to cause a lot of flatulence.
I bought Inulin in Holland and Barrett.. It has absolutely nothing to do with insulin!
