Hi, having been very thirsty the last few weeks, saw Dr yesterday and had a blood test today. Dr phoned at 7pm to tell me I have diabetes and gave me an appointment for tomorrow. Feeling not so good about this. I am epileptic, have high bp. Been on diuretics for a few months, last August blood test was normal, ie no signs of diabetes. I wondered if anyone thinks diuretics may increase chance of becoming diabetic. I'm not trying to blame everything on diuretics as there is a family history, I'm a bit overweight and yes, I have a sweet tooth

Hi, I've no experience with diuretics so I'll leave that for someone else to comment on.

Did the dr say what your blood test results actually were?..Number wise

I'll tag @daisy1 who can provide you with newbie info that may help you get your head around things a little, please ask any other questions you have :)

While I rarely say this to new people, I feel confident in saying it to you: your epilepsy, new diabetes diagnosis, and extra weight to lose make you a prime candidate for a ketogenic (low-carb) diet. If you haven't already, I'd strongly suggest looking into it more.

I cannot comment on anything to do with your epilepsy... However, I do take diuretic medication for my bp, mine is called bendroflumethiazide. On the leaflet, there's no indication that they can be the cause of diabetes, but it does say about side effects on metabolism, might cause worsening of existing diabetes. I will be chatting to my gp about this issue..

I've bought a libre this week mine is accurate same as my " my Pura X " blood test system.I am so glad about the libre won't be without it now.

Hi you could discuss a fasting type diet with your GP. Wouldn't know how sensible that is with epilepsy. This is a short term reset type diet then you need a long term strategy as torq states
