Any diabetes plus coeliac disease?

Have a step-son with T1 and step-daughter with coeliac. One of my daughters is wheat intollerant.
My husband and I eat a low carb diet and there is no wheat in our pantry. I have absolutely no need to have wheaten flour as I use almond meal, flaxseed meal, coconut flour, lupin flour etc for any sort of baking. We check all labels for gluten like soy sauce, stock cubes. Husband's daughter has voiced concerns in the past that she finds it hard to get low GI products like bread and crackers and has looked at our diet with curiosity but does not embrace it though she compliments me on cakes and puddings I have created for her when she is visiting.
As you already are a low carber it should not present a huge change for you.
I wish you good health as you become vigilant for the hidden gluten. :wink:

My Son James has coeliac disease and has been gluten free now for 6 years. We found it hard at first, but now manage quite well. His yearly check ups are spot on and has had no ill effects apart from one misunderstanding at a chip shop where we were given the wrong chips and James was really really sick and would not want to go through that again. They did apologise for their error tho and now we are EXTREMELY vigilant.

I assume you are having your monthly quota of gluten free products on prescription and there are numerous products now as of 6 years ago. Are you a member of the Coeliac Society as they have a wonderful Food and Drink Directory with all the well known supermarkets listed.

We do find eating out a problem some times and we are actually off to Spain again on Tuesday for a week and have done a bit of homework on eating out as we have not gone to this part of Spain before.

Is james on any meds for this or is all controllable via the right diet and foods only. I only ask as I have to use antispasmodic and pain relieving meds for mine.

Have you been told to carry on eating gluten products as James had to wait for a biopsy and was told to keep eating gluten until then,(this would give a true picture of the villi inside) but he was so ill I had to push and push to get him in before Christmas so that he was not suffering so we managed to get him in on 12 December . No meds for this condition just the right foods/diet. If you look on coeliac.org.uk you will see what you are allowed (according to age) on script and how many units per month. James is allowed 15 units, but actually I now just get his bread on script as it took a long time to find one that he liked and my GP does let us have some flour/mix now and then so that we can make pastry and cakes, but I now buy things like pasta, bread rolls, biscuits,pizza bases myself.
If you keep us updated I will let you know of some websites who will give you free samples of things that you could then possibly order on script

Anna, we have a little firm on one of the trading estates in Leyburn called the Gluten-free Kitchen. I think they send food round the country. If I find a web address for them I'll let you know.

I know where you are coming from as I felt the same way with James as if diabetes was not enough to cope with but you WILL get to grips with it, and when I shop I shop more for the coeliac side than the diabetes side of things. I shop at Asda, Sainsbury (which have a fantastic gluten free section) and Tesco that all have a gluten free (Free Foods) Section. Also when you really really look you will be surpsied at what (ordinary day to day food) is actually gluten free.

The above supermarkets all have their own brand of cornflakes suitable for coeliacs.
Majority of Walkers crisps are suitable
Genius Wholemal and white bread (Tesco) is nice for sandwiches as well, but James likes Juvela (go on line to see this website) bread for toast which he has on script.
Yoghurts
and numerous other products which is why IT IS A MUST to get the Food and Drink Directory.

And all the above are taken in moderation with carb counting.

Anna, do you like crackers? The lady opposite me in hospital was coeliac and diabetic and she offered me one of her crackers they were really nice and not too bad carb wise either. They were called Crimbles and you can get them in most supermarkets she said Hope that helps a bit.

Our Tesco has a gluten-gree section. Don't know whether they all do . . .

I have both coeliac and diabetes too. I must admit lately i've been on and off with monitering my coeliac diet, been a little naughty :shock:

When I am behaved though I tend to find i'm ok with most of the gluten free foods, it does take a while to get used to and its not always fun watching your mates eat the fun things on a night out but you do get used to it.

I think the tescos and asda range of gf foods is really good but I do tend to find you need to go to the bigger stores to get what your looking for.

I don't tend to bake too much but I do have a good recipe for cake if your interested. And we have fun making pancakes as well - it's a nice change to the boring breakfasts

You can find gluten free breads, pasta, biscuits, crackers etc in some of the large supermarkets now. Look down the 'Free-From' aisle. They are though, a bit expensive, so if you can order gluten free breads etc through the GP who will write you out a monthly prescription. Some breads come as pre baked and have a use by date on them while others can be obtained as 'fresh baked' and are baked and delivered to pharmacies per order.

While you decide on what to order by prescription, rice cakes are gluten free and can be bought fairly easily.

Lots of food is gluten free but this can be checked out by reading the list of ingredients on food packets. Heinz produces a lot of their canned stuff as gluten free.

i am type 1 diabetic on an insulin pump and i am coealiac as well.

like other people in the forum i have also registered with the coeliac society and i find their food directory very helpful but saying that i got used to it pretty quickly and isnt it true that we eat the same food all the time? we have a number of meals/products and we rotate and as soon as we familirize with what is gluten free and where it is in the supermarket then it is easy.
I would recomment Genious bread. I rather pay for my food that have it on prescription as i love that bread and sainsbury's white bread rolls with seeds. i like corn pasta rather than rice paste... i do not eat biscuits, cakes, etc.... normally, only as a treat from time to time. I got my own toaster, side of the kitchen where only gf food would be put on (I am luky with a shape L Kitchen and the rest of the family use the toaster on the other side so no bread crums contamination). Once you set a rotine tyou will be laughing!

What I find tricky is the lack of understanding of some pple and eating out is a pain, especially in places you do not know. Wher I live i know what I can eat int he restaurants int eh area and the Italian restaurant I go to they are happy for me to bring my GF bread/pasta and make the same dishes for me!

IN Spain, I recomment MERCADONA. It is a brilliant supermarket as everything that is gluten free is labelled SIN GLUTEN. Sausages, etc... that int he UK will have glluten are GF in SPAIN!! It is brilliant!

I use good creams for my hands as I wash them many many times a day as I have cross over with gluten foods for the rest of the family.

The beginnign is a shock and I felt it was unlucky but i was relieved to know because I soon started to feel better. I know people think I am fussy but I do nto care, I say, I am diabetic and coeliac and if you poison me I will be sick in exactly two hours with terrible effects. They take me seriously then.

gluten free bread in Spain is not very nice and more expensive. take your own and freeze it!! I always do that now!

Also in France, althought the French GF section in both Spain and France is very good but a lot dearer. I love the white little cakes with choc inside!

How are you getting on with your gluten free foods?

I am also Coeliac and type 2!!

I will admit I found it all too hard to accept both conditions but am slowly moving in the right direction now... eating low carb, and enjoy all the fresh fruit n veggies... I tend to test myself a lot when having a new food to make sure my body tolerates it but it is different for each of us as we are all individuals..

Any help I can be, give me a shout...

Hi I am a type 1 diabetic and coeliac too. Find it very difficult when eating out as lot of places don t understand about gluten free food. Being a coeliac is also an auto immune disease like diabetes. The symptoms are weight loss anaemia tiredness high sugars. Anyone with these symptoms I would suggest getting tested for coeliac disease. It can sometimes take doctors ages to diagnose this.
