Any foot amputees with any advice?

My father in law has been suffering with an ulcerated foot since September. He has been in and out of hospital twice in the last month. He was taken in the last time hoping for a stent ( i think) to be put in the vein at the top of his leg as he has a blockage there. This didnt work and now the options seem to be either a false bit of vein being inserted (but the doc is unsure if this will be viable) or to have his foot amputated.
He is 75 years old and is (obviously) worried by this prospect and unsure of the side effects/problems/benefits. Is there anyone out there who has been through amputation and could give us some advice and insight to the procedure and the after effects?

Thanks

Hi jazzybean

I am so very sorry to hear that your father-in-law is so poorly, what a worrying time this is for him and the family.

Lets hope that it doesnt come to amputation, maybe the stent will work, I am hoping and praying for you all, as Ian suggested maggots or leeches might be worth trying, or Manuka honey worked for some people that I know, and it is used in many hospitals all over the world, even in the UK.

Discuss this with the medical team, these treatments may be an option, you never know.

If it does indeed have to come to amputation have a look around this forum, its set up by Heather Mills-McCartney, herself an amputee, I know she has bad press, but she is doing some seriously good work out there, here is the link

And also make sure that he eats the healthiest food possible to support his immune system and help his body fight back.

I am wishing you and the family all the very best

Yes i'd heard of the Manuka Honey being good for lots of things so maybe we can suggest that to him. And the maggots also seem to be making a comeback=not sure if they are a nationwide remedy at the moment but worth a question!

Thanks for your suggestions

My T1 husband had a very persistent venous ulcer. A pressure dressing in the form of flight socks has helped clear it. I don't know if that's relevant to your problem, but isonly the last few weeks the leg has been clear. the circulation was ood though. the only thing i know for poor circulation is exercise and simvastatin to support the blood vessels.

HI - my mother in law had an ulcer on her lower leg (she is not diabetic) after getting it dressed at the doctors for ages, they eventually got manika honey and started dressing it using the manika honey at home - it has now cleared up.

I hope it doesn't cometo amputation and that you can get it cleared up.

All the best
