I am completely confused , I was told I have diabetes....stop eating all sugary things and lose weight. THAT WAS ALL THE INFO I GOT !

I get checked every 12 months with a fasting blood test ( last time it was 6.7 ) my feet get looked at and I get weighed.

It has been nearly 3 years now and I still don,t really feel I have any control.

I do feel very ill with other health problems and have paid little attention to the diabetes so it is my fault but can anyone offfer a suggestion for a book or something to put me on the right road please.

I know it seems late to ask but yesterday at a hospital app ( other problems ) I weighed 16 stone !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PANIC

I have to get things sorted. I have to find out how much of my not well feeling is related to diabetes..I need to get some control.
I NEED TO LOSE WEIGHT, cannot exercise as I am disabled.

No drop in clinic for diabetes as far as I can find out in my area.

Thanks for any replies.

You can start by going on a low carb diet, this will help you lose weight and help control your glucose levels.
Unfortunately, I'm not a doctor, so I suggest getting advice from your GP.

I would get hold of a blood glucose meter and some test strips. [ Most meter suppliers will give a free starter pack]. then keep a record of your fassting blood glucose. Combined wih a controlled carbohydrate diet, you should find things coming under control.

Hi I agree with the other posters that you must have a low-carb diet to keep weight down and sugar as well. This forum has as much info as most diabetes books and is up-to-date so I wouldn't rush to get a book. I suspect your annual blood test is both a fasting check and an HBa1C. The latter is probably the result you were given and shows the previous 3 months average blood sugar. 6.7 is getting on the high side but not bad. So, keep all carbs low'ish and low-GI (not just sugar) and get hold of a meter to check your levels 2 hours after a meal
