As above really - just would like to know peoples experience. Looks useful in reducing BGs.

ALA = Alpha Lipoic Acid

But sorry Paul, no personal experience of it.

Alpha lipoic acid is an insulin mimetic. In other words it can stimulate the uptake of glucose from the blood by fat cells and muscle cells, much as insulin does, only to a lesser degree.
Some people find blood sugars are a little lower, and insulin doses can be reduced, if ALA supplements are taken. I tried it out a few years back but didn't notice any particular improvement, certainly not enough to justify taking oral meds every day.

All the best,

fergus

Alpha lipoic acid is also prescribed (in Europe) as treatment for neuropathy, in the UK you have to buy it yourself.
I have taken it for several years now, its also an anti-oxidant and used as treatment/complimentary treatment for liver diseases, etc - here is a link. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lipoic_acid
I am type 2 by the way, just not on medication any more (for now) -
All the best

Alpha Lipoic acids?
I'm a type 2 who uses it.
I don't know if it's a co-incidence, I've tightened up on my diet or the ALA, but my fasting BG is down below 5 now.

Been on ALA several times for my neuropathy not noticed any real improvement of nerve function or BS. But still take it anyway (currently taking benfotiame as well for a wee try)
