Anyone else having difficulties obtaining Gliclazide

I have been on Gliclazide ( two 60Mg tablets every morning) for quite a few years and all of a sudden my pharmacy have had difficulties obtaining the pills so I have to make do with taking four 30Mg tablets every morning which has the same result but is a bit of a pain.

The pharmacy say that they have tried several wholesalers and all are out of stock.

Is this just my pharmacy having problems or is there a genuine shortage of Gliclazide in 60Mg pills?

Yes. My 40mg pills did not turn up this month when I ordered my repeat scrip. The pharmacy did not give any notification of a shortage. I also did not get my Dapagliflozin med this month.

Update: just placed my next months supplies scrip request, and they confirmed that my last scrip did include the glic, so it is not the surgery witholding for review.

I have now been told that Gliclazide in 60Mg modified release format has been discontinued so I have to ask the GP to issue a fresh prescription for double the number of 30Mg pills

I ordered my 40mg ones at the weekend, hope the local pharmacy has them, don’t fancy cutting 80’s into quarters

Quarters? Halving is easy, the pills are already prescored for that. I am using up some old scrip 80's for 40's like that.

Just got my next months supply.. No gliclazide once again. This month it is marked as a shortage so may appear later. did get the Dapagliflozin this month though( which is one I want to stop taking)

I don't know if this is due to shortages, but my Pharmacist originally dispensed Crescent brand 80mg tablets, which didn't bring down my blood sugar levels effectively, for the last month I have been given Milpharm brand which noticeably improved my BS levels but now I have been given a brand called Genesis which looks worryingly like the Crescent ones in different packaging. Going back to Pharmacy this morning, but has anyone else experienced a difference in performance between brands?

Not noticed anything myself. What may be happening is that different mnufacturers may be using different substratesw (the bulking agent that carries the active ingredient) and this may react differently if your stomach acid levels are weak. Are you on PPI medication to protect your stomach lining? I had this problem with Metformin where a swapped brand did not dissolve and came out as it went in.

Thanks for your response, I am not on PPI medication, but cannot tolerate Metformin, so am prescribed Alogliptin.

Saw the pharmacist this morning who poo-pooed the idea of brand making any difference but later phoned to say they had located the Milpharm brand at another branch so hope to be sorted soon.
