Anyone had a reaction to a Steroid Injection?

I had an Intra articular steroid injection into my hip, I was so ill afterwards, sweating and feverish for two days. I was due my usual HBA1C test a few days later, it had risen from 46 to 49. I am diet controlled Type 2 Diabetic and have been doing really well. I have got it down from 63 over a period of two years. Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar reaction to a steroid injection? Thanks for any responses :)

Welcome to the forum @silkysam.

I had a steroid injection several years back and didn't experience any sweating and fever symptoms afterwards, but I suppose like any drug we all react differently.

Thanks for reply. My Gp did say I may have had an allergic reaction , the site of injection blistered quite badly also.

That sounds nasty, only hope after all you've been through the steroid work.

Sorry to hear that @silkysam, my aunt had a hip replacement a few years ago and it changed her life, prior to that she was in great pain and discomfort and could hardly move around.

I have a friend who had a reaction like this to a steroid injection. I've also known a lot of people who had hip or knee replacements, and these procedures really helped them. Good luck.

Thanks Catlady :) Were your friends diabetic who had the hip replacements?

Hi @silkysam steroids should only be used as a last resort in people who have diabetes as they raise blood sugars and can make diabetes hard to control. The doctor should have discussed this with you before the injection was given!! I used to have steroid injections and they were stopped because of the risk factor, mind you im on oral steroids as well. A one off injection shouldn't do any lasting damage but please be careful if this is being considered as a longer term treatment. There are quite a few steroid dependant forum users here and most will tell you the nightmare of trying to control steroid related diabetes!!! Hope you are feeling better soon, Sue xx

Thankyou so much MrsPuddleduck for your mine of information. At least I realize now what made me feel so peculiar. it is such an uphill battle this trying to keep on top of things. I was doing so well. Never mind, I am armed with more knowledge and experience now and will have to try harder :). Thanks again for your kind and in depth reply. Really appreciate it.

It is a minefield!! The worst thing is (normally) the steroid injections make you feel so much better, especially if you are having a lot of pain. I know when they told me I couldn't have anymore I could have cried!!!! I've been on oral steroids for about 10 years and the injections were on top. Now of course I'm steroid dependant which is a nightmare when trying to control my blood sugars (I'm on insulin). Sadly the NHS isn't always good at joined up thinking so if you see a non diabetic specialist for something they don't automatically consider the effect something will have on your diabetes (not a criticism cos they are all overloaded, just a little personal frustration!!). Forewarned is forearmed as they say!! Take care, Sue xxxx

They weren't as it happens. All surgery has some risk, and this can be increased when someone has diabetes. I guess it comes down to which is worse, the pain and mobility issues or the risk and recovery process associated with surgery.

Well as I was so euphoric at the prospect of having mobility and painfree movement, I just didn't think to tell the consultant I was diabetic, or that I had high blood pressure when he asked if I had any health problems . So thinking about it I guess I should contact him and let them know as the daiabetes was diagnosed about a year after my accident.
