Anyone had issues with GP SURGERIES saying have to use a certain meter?

I think you will be able to appeal, I'm in Ashford and was led to believe the change of meters suggested by the PCT (primary care trust) was only for T2s.

Just picked up my element meter from my surgery. I use accu chek. Aviva at the moment, my comments on the new meter

Meter itself and the strips not much different from my accu chek

Don't like the lancets will probably continue using my fastclick lancets

Tested the same drop of blood with both meters just to see the difference accu chek 5.00 element 5.3 so allowing for the accuracy of meters I see no difference in the readings, if I had done 2 tests with just one meter I would probably get the same range if readings

So quite happy with the change especially if it means I will get more strips on script as I buy most of my own at the moment

I am in Cumbria and talking to my friends who are in different surgeries it seems to be county wide

Just picked up my Element meter. I agree with what has been said above, the meter and strips seem fine. I have a box of Accu-check strips left so will do some comparison tests to judge accuracy. The lancet is DREADFUL!! I think my lancet I got in 1998 was better quality. I test a lot, can be 8 times a day and I'm really reluctant to use this new one. Going to see if I can continue my Multiclix lancet prescription.

They might have improved the Element, but if I had continued to rely on it, I could easily have had some very dangerous hypos by now as it always read too high. The lancing device is a generic Korean one that is supplied with a lot of other meters.

Hi, just thought a little update might help some people.
I was at the hospital for my check up and discussed the new meter with my nurse. She was a bit cagey about how good the element one is and since she thought my hba1c at 41 was a bit low (?!?) I should continue to use my accucheck meter since i was used to it and could trust the readings. So she's put that in my letter to my gp so hopefully that will be sorted!

Hi just checking to see if anyone has had this issue. I went to put in my repeat prescription the other day and was handed a letter from the receptionist from the doctor. It basically said all diabetics now have to use a meter called glucomen lx plus some details of how to order my free one and a code to use and followed on to say to use up my remaining test strips and next prescription with be changed to include the test strips for this meter. I discussed with the receptionist that the meter I have been using lately has really helped as it is compact I can carry it with me at all times in my pocket and its bought my overall blood sugars down etc. she said this comes from higher up and all I can do is try and appeal it if I want but that's it. Is this fair to have no choice what so ever of the meter I use daily? Is it my doctors getting money under the table to push one meter?

Hello, I still have and use my Accu- Check Aviva Expert and was given a back up meter at the diabetes clinic( hospital) last week of a Accu-Check nano, both use the same strips. So, maybe I've been lucky or maybe they will be pouncing on me soon  o_O

Type 1's should have no problems keeping what they have most trust in. I use Freestyle LIte strips at home and AC mobile on the move. The Freestyle Freedom Lite remains the most accurate system on the market. It was tested along with 42 others in this report:
www.jdst.org/September2012/PDF/VOL-6-5-ORG2-FRECKMANN.pdf and it is clearly shown as the most accurate. This was an independent test report even though it was funded by Roche Products and the confidence is increased by the fact that Accu-Chek systems, although in the main accurate, were not at the top of the list.. Interestingly the newer Optium test strips (which were not in the report) are not as accurate as Freestyl Lite, according to the manufacturers own literature.

Yes my doctor said all doctors in plymouth had agreed to use one type of blood tester and would not give me tabs for my ACCU CHEK mobile I reminded my doctor he had sent me a letter saying I must check my blood on long drives every 2hours .i pointed out that I could not use the tester he gave me in the car because you need a table but my ACCU CHEK MOBILE You can just use your hands and I demonstrated He gave me the prescription Hope this helps colin
