Finally diagnosed type 2, after an age of arguing for tests with doctors. Definitively not LADA, in light of GAD and C-peptide tests.

A 20 year old guy, at 65kg, a BMI of 21. Have beginnings of DME at diagnosis. It sucks big time,I know prognosis is pretty ***** for such an early age, but sure what can you do really but plough on. I want to immediately grab control of this thing by low-carbing to the max and really going at my gym routine.

I've spent a a good deal of time sifting through articles online from the official recommendations to the outright quacks, but you guys are on the ground actually fighting this thing daily. Any starting advice? I've bought bernstein's book and he seems to have the thing sussed, would you agree?

Anyone have any tips? Know anyone on the forums in a similar situation(young, normal weight , T2) ? Thank you in advance!

Hi, welcome :)

Tips? Your doing the right things, read, learn, exercise...... Just avoid carbs and your right on the money :)

Hi and welcome!

Yup. I like Bernstein (see my sig).

Have you found the bloodsugar101 site too? Excellent info. Rather like Bernstein but aimed more at diet controlled T2s, and for me a more sustainable lifestyle.

It must really hurt to be diagnosed so young. But my personal opinion is that by keeping your blood glucose as near to non diabetic levels as possible, you can dramatically slow, or even halt the progression. So you are on the right track.

Hi and welcome. You've definitely come to the right place for information, support and advice.

This site has a massive wealth of information - so my advice would be to browse and read as many threads as you can that you feel are relevant or interest you.

Good Luck in fighting this :)

First tip is to get a meter, then to low carb. Keep beer at a minimum.

Keep an eye on bg as you may be LADA or something else not typical type two and if so your bg might deteriorate suddenly and you want to know if that happens. Lack of antibodies doesn't confirm anything you know.

What are your numbers as in HbA1c and fasting bg and postprandial?

Hi! Your story sounds somewhat similar to mine. I'm 24 and was diagnosed last year. They initially diagnosed me as a type 2, but because I didn't feel like I fit that description (normal weight, fairly young, active) I wanted to have more tests done.

They measured my C-peptide levels 3 times now and they were always within a normal range. I think that with type 2 diabetes C-peptide is usually higher than average, at least that's what my endocrinologist said. I was negative for GAD antibodies (but not tested for other types of antibodies as they don't do this where I live), and I have a normal BMI. I do have a family history of diabetes: my dad, one of his brothers, and their dad. All of them were diagnosed around the age of 50.

Because of the strong family history I am currently being tested for MODY (I'll get the result next week on Thursday, finally.. after half a year I hope to get some more clarity on what I have!!). Have you ever heard of this? It's diabetes caused by a single genetic mutation. Although people of all ages can have MODY, these are the usual characteristics:

- Strong family history of diabetes
- Diagnosed below the age of 25
- Normal BMI
- Negative GAD/antibodies
- No signs of ketoacidosis
- Still no need for insulin 2 years after diagnosis
- Responds extremely well to a certain type of medication: sulfonylurea

It is often misdiagnosed as type 2 and in people our age as type 1, but it's neither of those. I hope this information helps a little!

[edit] Some extra info I forgot to mention.. not sure if it's relevant but just in case: my HbA1c is 7.5% (58 mmol/mol), no symptoms and currently not on meds because I need to wait for the genetic test results
