Just wondering if anyone has tried pukka teas?
I qfanxy giving them a go (especially the cinnamon one! ) but there are no nutritional info on the packs at all.
I would think the carb / sugar value would be close to 0 but there website does say they use licorice for sweetening so there might be something there...
The answer to is there sugar in our teas on their FAQ is mainly marketing rubbish too...:
Our guiding philosophy is to connect people with the power of plants to help them live healthier and happier lives. We do this by creating unique herbal tea blends using the finest grade organic herbs with the intention of making delicious tasting teas that also help you feel good. We take this privileged position of helping people make healthy choices for themselves and the planet very seriously indeed. Although it’s our passion, it is not without its challenges.
Sweetness is just one of the six essential tastes that our Herbsmith Sebastian considers when creating our blends, carefully balancing the therapeutic effect of our teas with the best taste experience. We often add fennel or liquorice to our teas to sweeten them. Liquorice, for example, is a magical plant that not only has 50 times the natural sweetness of refined sugar but it is also an incredible herb. It is calming and nourishing, and its silky nature helps soothe your whole system- it also acts as a good harmoniser of the other herbs in the blend, bringing out their best qualities so you get the most balanced cup of tea.
Although we never add pure sugar as an ingredient to our teas, the essential oils we use in eight of our teas contain small amounts of organic sugar added as part of the process of drying the essential oil into a granule. It's the only way we have found to get pure organic essential oils from fruits into our blends so far but we are working on it
Pukka’s Elderberry & Echinacea tea for example, which has one of the highest fruit contents of all our fruit teas, showed in analytical tests that a 200ml cup has only 4kcal of energy, which is in part derived from the intrinsic sugar naturally present in the fruits, herbs and the essential oils. For comparison, a teaspoon of sugar (4.2g) contains 16kcal of energy. So other Pukka teas containing fruit will have either a similar or lesser caloric content.
