I have used Xenical after a high fat meal, prior to starting low carb. Just wondered if anyone uses it to assist with weight loss.

The drugs name changes depending on the country, Australia is Xenical. Have added the info from Wikipedia.

Orlistat is a drug designed to treat obesity. It is marketed as a prescription drug under the trade name Xenical by Roche in most countries, and is sold over-the-counter as Alli by GlaxoSmithKline in the United Kingdom and the United States. Wikipedia

@Tannedhaggis I have not taken it, but read about Orlistat in weight loss forums. Usually people keep as low fat as possible to avoid side effects. I am not sure it would be compatible with a high fat diet.

My doctor offered it to me, and advised that I would need to be as low fat as possible to avoid nasty side effects like uncontrolled fatty diarrhea. It removes the fat from the meal and stops it being digested, so there is no point in eating the fat anyway. So I decided not to use it .

forgot to add: You dont need high fat with low carbing, especially if you want to try to lose weight. I just make sure that the fats I do have normally are ones like butter, olive oil, goose fat and the fats found in the meat. The low carbing target is the important bit for your blood sugar levels.

Husband was prescribed it years ago in an attempt to get his weight down. The side effects after eating even a speck of oil or fat, to put it politely, are explosive and messy. Even if you don't feel the need to get to a loo immediately, there are problems with seepage night and day.

After seeing the indignity, shame and embarrassment he went through, I would not touch this drug with a bargepole.

Yes Tabbyjoolz I have heard of those side effects, though I haven't had many of those problems with Xenical, but my diet didn't contain much fat, mainly carbs, when I was taking it. I have used it for about 4 years now, but not regularly, only after a meal such as a Chinese takeaway or an ice cream binge. Now that I am eating more fat than ever before, I was thinking it would assist the weightloss.

Maybe I am still a little bit brain washed with the old low fat message and still need to get my head around good fats.

Have you been able to lose much weight during these 4 years? and keep it off?

even good fats will give diarrhea as the Orlistat doesnt distinguish between the two.

I don't really think I have lost much weight, just haven't put as much on as I might have done. They have enabled me to stay stable around 80kg about 8 kg more than I am comfortable at (170cm).
I am really enjoying the LCHF as it has kept my hunger at bay and I seem to be losing my sweet tooth. Maybe I can just enjoy the fat and still lose weight!

You can enjoy the fat and lose weight. Since I started LCHF in August I have lost nearly 14kg. Apart from occasional cravings for cake, I have almost lost my sweet tooth as well.
