Being so high I can barely open my eyes :(
Hi Everyone

I've switched to Apridra from Humalog and I am on Day 3. Reason for switch was to see if I could drop my highs quicker.

I am at a loss now because my BG is fine when I wake up (5.1 this am) but 2 hours post breakfast (same as last few months 2 x weetabix tiny bit of splenda) my levels for the last three days have been 17.8 , 17.5 and today 18.5. Do I need lots more Apidra?? If this is the case I will go back to Humalog as this is defeating the purpose. So fed up :(

17's/18's is extremely high postprandial, you need to increase the insulin or reduce your breakfast carbs, I've not tried Weetabix for a long long time but I find (I'm type 1 also) that porridge is much kinder on postprandial bg readings especially when good fats are added in the way of pumpkin seeds, linseeds etc.

Best that you speak with your DSN about how much you should increase your Apidra by, I've never used this insulin so can't talk from experience.

I use Levemir and Humalog 100. I used to be on Humalog Mix 25 years ago but it was ****. I find as low acting insulin with a rapid for meals etc is definitely he way forward! I am not sure what type you are on. Personally what I would do is test in morning then not eat breakfast and see if I was still sky high. But it depends why type you are on as to how I would act on the findings x

I know it is too high, its just that I always have the same breakfast every day and its been fine before.

Will try something new tomorrow and see if it makes a difference

Thankyou for replying

Thankyou thats a good idea, will give it a bash in the morning. What is low acting insulin? I'm Type 1 and on Levemir (background) split dose and up till last week Humalog with three meals and any correction doses.

Hi Kareeta

I now use Apidra in my pump and have found that its action is a bit delayed in the 1st hour after eating breakfast, then by the 2nd I;m a bit lower, by the 3rd Im nearly at my target and then by the 4th Im at my target or just below it.

You may find that you need to adjust your breakfast carb ratio or inject about 20mins before eating...

Hi iHs

My results this am were:
7am 5.17uApidra 17uLevemir
7.30 2 weetabix semi milk 9.30 18.5 so I injected 5uApidra to correct
11.30 12.8
1pm 11.3

I'm so tired now

Hi

What carb ratio are you using at breakfast time for the weetabix? You shouldnt go as high as 18.5mmol 2hrs later. Also what is your correction factor?

Nor real scientific ratio i'm afraid, I generally have 2 units to every 10g carb

Same again for the correction doses, usually 1unit will drop me one point over the hour, but if i'm really high like today I just inject more (5units) and hope that I lower.

Thankyou

It may be that with Apidra you will need to use a bit more bolus at breakfast time - like 3 or 4u for 10g carb.....

If you dont fancy doing that, go back to Humalog and see whether your bg levels are different.... I'm wondering if there is something wrong with your pen or whether there is something wrong with the Apidra??

I will check a different pen tonight and see if it makes a difference (they are disposable)

If not , tomorrow I will go back on Humalog, I can't be having to take more insulin its just ridiculous. I've managed to lose half a stone lately through carb reduction and exercise and more insulin will ruin that :(

Thankyou
Karen

I'm also on Apidra and have the same problem as you. Did you manage to get this resolved?
