Apixaban raises bg?

I am now taking Apixaban but have just been reading up about the possible side effects and am rather horrified to find that in 1%to10% of patients it causes raised bg and an increased risk of developing diabetes. I am obliged to take an anti-coagulant at the very least for months, and possibly for life, and Apixaban was the choice of myself and the specialist nurse who was advising me. I am wondering if anyone else has taken Apixaban, or another anti-coagulant, and what their experience has been.

Hi @Alexandra100,

I was on Apixaban for about two years and I didn't have problems with it. I've now been off it since September and it my blood sugar levels have not changed significantly.

Keeping my fingers crossed that it will work for you too. Maybe it would be a good idea to keep monitoring your blood sugar levels and if you find them increasing, go back and talk to your nurse.

Thanks very much Ziggy. However I notice that your A1c has come down from 36 in 2015 to 31 in 2017 and I wonder how this relates to your Apixaban use? (31 is my projected ideal A1c!)

Hi @Alexandra100,

Thanks for asking. I have just stopped taking Apixaban two months ago, so the drop occurred while on Apixaban.
