Applying for british licence

trewe

Newbie
Hi all,

I am a type 1 diagnosed in Jan 2009. I am from Australia and have not exchanged my licence for a british licence until now as this hasn't been necessary, I'm in the process of filling out the paperwork at the moment. I have good control and can't remember the last time I had a hypo and I am under GP care - am I correct in assuming they will need to contact him to verify information? How long does this usually take?

In Australia the process is quite simple - take a form to your dr, get him to fill it out and take it to the transport office and they amend your drivers licence and hand it straight back to you, so to me this application process seems quite drawn out and I am quite apprehensive! The DVLA also seems quite a lot stricter than their Australian counterparts - can anyone give me some more information on the process?

Many thanks!

Hi,
all you do is fill in the medical form and send it to the DVLA. They will contact your GP if they need to.
Just make sure you understand what you are filling in and make sure you are very careful in how you word things.

You fill out the form and send it back to the DVLA, they only contact your Doctor if they feel the need to. Fill it in truthfully but carefully. You can continue driving with out your license, I would just keep the a copy of the forms with you in case you need to produce them. Then the DVLA will send back your license and you are clear for another 3 years of driving before it all starts again.

I am just going through the same process and the DVLA have really tightened up the questions on the forms this time round.

they have really tightened up which i can understand so all of you who r putting in for yr h g vs who are on insulin its a very long process they rang me the other day to say they were arrangin for me to have another test as i cud only do 7 min on the tread mill instead of 9 it used to b 6 min and as yr on it it slopes up so hopin now i get it back before xmas who knows sick of waitin
