Are Accu-Chek Going Codeless?

I've just opened a new box of Accu-Chek Aviva test strips and instead of the usual white code chip, there was a black one, and an enclosed leaflet saying this:

'The black code chip works for ALL test strips intended for use with your meter. Continue using the black code chip even if new test strip boxes contain different coloured code chips or different code numbers.

After inserting the black code chip, discard any future code chips you receive.'

Does this mean that Accu-Chek are essentially going codeless, as inserting this new chip into your meter makes it codeless from now on, as it will now work with all strips made by Accu-Chek (for certain meters at least)?

And if so, does that mean the codeless strip price war has begun?!

I think this, along with the release of the recent SD Codeless Meter/Strips, who are currently selling boxes of 50 strips for £4.99, hopefully means that strips from all companies will now decrease substantially in price, and about time too!

Anybody else use Accu-Chek meters and come across this black chip?

Only noticed the black code chip on Friday after collecting my prescription, Accu-chek are quite slow as other manufacturers already have code-less meters on the market.

So not using a code chip isn't that big a deal? What was it originally for, I never really understood why I had to put in a new chip to match the strips every time I started a new box.

Sounds like it won't effect the price of strips then? :(

Ah well, I've got an SD Codeless coming in the post, so I'll be buying strips from them as they seem to be the cheapest around :)

Hmm, so does this mean the coded info will now be contained on the test strips themselves? The Wiki article mentions how meters can give inaccurate readings without coding, I presume it must be on the strip if that's the case, but then how is it possible for this new black strip to work with strips that come with a coded white chip? :problem:
