Are more people getting Type 1 in their late twenties and early thirties?

43 for me. I was a text book case of type 1 but because of my age my GP surgery insisted I must be type 2 - nearly killed me taking that approach. A&E were furious when I finally turned up with a Hba1C of 148 and sky high ketones.

I was only 9 stone before the rapid onset weight loss. I was closer to 7.5 by the time I was in A&E - so there was nothing else that would say type 2 apart from my age.

No illness or traumatic event in the run up to diagnosis and no history in my family. Pure bad luck.

Aged 53 & T2 since Dec 2022 but 3 weeks ago presented myself to A&E feeling poorly and a gluscose of 19 even though had been managing T2 easy for 2 years.

Had lost almost a stone in weight in less than 6 weeks and even went to my GP multiple times requesting a c-peptide and GAD test but was told no and that I was not managing my T2 and should consider metformin.

After 5 days in hospital having suffered a DKA with ketones of 6.6 and glucose that peaked at 24 I was sent home on insulin and as of today have been told T1 as GAD test came back positive. The doctor was suprised I walked in let alone drove myself there!!!

Will add that the preceding weeks maybe 6 weeks I was proper poorly with a chest infection and throaty cough so believe this tipped me over the edge.

Trauma, stress, viruses - I’m quite sure you’re all right ……….when I was diagnosed 37 years ago I was convinced it was the amount of sugar I consumed that overloaded my pancreas.

I’m now quite certain it was a nasty bout of Chicken Pox which affected my sister badly in other ways - and I ended up Type 1
