Are pumps on rations?

Hi everyone,

I was disgnosed with T1 around 6 years ago and currently take Novorapid and Insulatard. I have been fighting to go onto a pump for around 2 years. Initally as my HBA1C was through the roof (13%) I was told there was no chance. Since then I have been on the PDACC course (a carb counting course run by the diabetic specialists in my local area) and have kept my blood sugars fairly stable. I still have phases where they run slightly higher than they should but mostly they are under control.
I am still being told that I am not allowed to transfer to a pump. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do in order to qualify for a pump?

Hi
I think criteria differs from pct to pct. There was talk of me getting a pump over 7 yrs ago and i only got mine this august. The main reason was i still had poorish control after attendung a similar course. I think the fact i developed severe retinopathy whuch resulted in a detatched retina and citrectomy op mayhave heloed them finally agree u had a good case fir one. Although im still in a 3 minth trial so no gaurantees they will continue ro fund it but im pretty hopeful they will as its done wonders as far as overall control gies.
If you have good control i know my pct wouldnt fund it unless u lost hypo awareness or something, but if you have managed to achieve this without a pump i guess they would argue what is the reason for one. Dont get me wrong i think they sre grest and in an ideal world all duabetics should have the option but the sad fact is its all about budgets and keeping there spending costs as low as possible :-(

Hi Jessica,
have you asked the reason for not being allowed a pump? If not ask for the reason in writing.
Then address the the areas highlighted or have a discussion regarding the bits you disagree with.
If no joy then ask for a referal via your GP to a pump friendly clinic.
As long as you meet NICE guidelines you are entitled to a pump.

if you have poor control and high hba1c you are unlikely to get a pump....reason is you will at greater risk if ketoacidosis as with a pump you only use short acting insulin and have no long acting insulin for back up...

having said that my daughter was told get your levels down and you can have a pump.....she said ithought a pump would help to get my levels down....if i can get my levels down without a pump i wouldn.t need one!!!!!!!!

now my daughter is very savvy re diabetes...10 days pre clinic app she lowers her carbs insulin and gets her hba1c by 2%....if she wants to lose a bit of weight she keeps her levels high......hmmmmm not the way to do it at all but can.t watch her all the time x

Hi elaine, thats strange as i was told one of the criteria for the pump was a high hba1c. Think it just goes to show that hcps seem to have different views as ti pcts regardless if what the NICE guidelunes may say.
Best wishes

Hi Elaine,
poor control by not doing all in your power to control your diabetes means no pump.Poor control due to the insulin's not being able to match your bodies need is candidate for a pump.
The reason your daughter will not get a pump is due to her poor control and no intention of doing any work to control her diabetes. Her team know exactly what's she is like they have seen it all before. The only person she is fooling is herself. :(

Hi Elaine,
Just adding that I realise you have and are doing all you can for Jane. It's Janes teenage hormones and rebellion that are causing the problem not you.
The teams know exactly who they can trust with a pump and at the moment Jane isn't one of them, because of her non compliance and not being able to accept her diabetes yet.

well i know janes control is bad most of the time....wish they did a course for T1 at the clinic....she would easily fit into the adolesence one but oh shes 12 not 14....why can.t they think about the indivual not just numbers.......they won.t even do a class about diabetes in her school and yes still waiting for counselling 2 yrs on.....i do try but...x

Oh its such a difficult age to deal wirh things without tje whole diabetes thing. At her age you dont think about the damage ur doing to ur bidy. Believe me ive been there. I was diagnised at 11 im 33 now. I became anorexic at 13 and spent all of my teen years in and out if hospital. I suffered untold comas and was in intensive cate a few times too. I put my mum through hell but didnt reslise it at the time :-(
Im paying for it now but if someone gad told me back tgen what the damage could do later on maybe things would be different. Who knows. But altgough as the previos poster said the inly person shes kiddung is herself, at her age shes too young to really appreciate the affects.
I really feel for u elaine as im sure it is very tough to kniw that she needs educating but there is ni service to cover her age group :-(
If theres any questions u may wish to ask please feelfee to pm me as u mention ur daughter controling weight thru the diabetes i know only too well how this can be ver deyramental to her long term health.
Best wishe
Leb x
