Oh no hope for me then. 3 years on I still want potatoes, so I don't suppose it will go away now. I may do what Sid suggested and try those Vivaldi potatoes when I find some. From about a good year of time /10months probably .
It was a gradual thing I went through .
Kept turning to the things (veggies) I loved the taste of .
And what loved me - in terms of my BG levels
Yes Vivaldi potatoes are said to be around half the carbs of other non waxy potatoes. Which theoretically means twice as many/much for the same carb reaction.
Unfortunately they are not as common as the more usual potatoes in our supermarkets but I buy them when I see them.
Although I am so used to eating 2 or at most 3 small roasties, 3 or 4 halves of new potatoes or a handful of chips that even when I do buy them I rarely eat any more as mealtimes have become second nature to me now.
Very true phoenix I doubt that most of the members here that were not around a few years ago will even know that there is a lower carb potato available as there is very little useful advice here any more even on low carbing the usual advice now is just to cut everything carby out completely which I believe is very bad advice personally.
According to some websites they are the same content as other varieties such as King Edward
The odd thing with me is that potatoes, rice and pasta push my blood sugars sky high but my body seems to tolerate roasted parsnips without any major increase in my BG numbers. I have no idea why. I seem to be okay with carrots, beetroot and horseradish. My only thought is that we are all different and by experiment and keeping a daily log of blood sugar testing can help you to understand what foods you can tolerate and what foods you cant. I am glad to say I love all vegetables. Red wine is okay for me but beer isn't. I set my target to under 7 mmo/l by bedtime and achieve this figure most of the time. In the past 4 months I haven't hit 7 mmo/l once. As I said, keep an eye on your blood sugars by testing regularly and make notes of what you have eaten when they are high. When they go below 3.5 I make a note of what I did to increase levels before bed and take note of what my fasting numbers next morning are and adjust for next time if necessary. Try not to eat too late into the evening.I keep seeing posts directed at newbies telling them not to eat root vegetables.
I know parsnips have a high carb content, raw carrots seem to be OK for a lot of posters and I think you would have to eat a lot of cooked carrots for them to have an effect. especially if you are not relying on them as the only vegetable on your plate. Radishes are eaten with salads, celeriac is a popular vegetable with many here as are turnips and swede, not forgetting horseradish. A few slices of beetroot with a salad seems OK as long as it is not just a plate of leaves. So to me it's only parsnips and potatoes that could affect my blood sugars. A meter will tell you what your tolerance is rather than dismiss all root vegetables.
Does anyone find that every root vegetable is off the menu?
naa,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I nicked mine off the internetOff-topic, @lucylocket61 , but had to do a double take when I was having a browse through another site - they've nicked your avatar!

Swede should be fine it is quite low carbI've just started on a low carb diet and today for lunch I left off the roasties but had sprouts, spring greens, broccoli and carrots. Sugar after 2.5 hrs was 6.7.
Will try swede next week
Which just goes to show the Diabetes challenge is not equal. You and others have other conditions to take care of. Sometimes people from Asia come on here and how on earth do they eliminate rice and bread. That just leaves protein or fruit. They just dont have the selection of veg available to mop up. Some of us should count our blessings!Low carb is under 130g of carbs a day - possibly under 100g on some sites.
the very low carbing of under 50g a day is relatively new and not all of us need to go that low, and some of us have complex health issues so have to compromise on how low we go so as not to upset everything we are juggling health-wise.
Even on this forum, when I joined in 2012, low carbing was around 130g-150g a day, I think, and many frowned on it.
