Are root vegetables off the menu?

Here's an old thread on celeriac. .It seemed to be quite popular back then, it's quite a shame that people aren't reminded of these alternatives
.http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/lower-carb-potatoes-celeriac.12307/
( I do eat all veg that I like (I hate swedes and parsnips) so I'm not the one to ask but I sometimes make a celeriac and potato dauphinois )

Very true phoenix I doubt that most of the members here that were not around a few years ago will even know that there is a lower carb potato available as there is very little useful advice here any more even on low carbing the usual advice now is just to cut everything carby out completely which I believe is very bad advice personally.

Lets see who comes up with the name of the potato I referred to first, no prizes but it will surprise many members here. A tip it sounds like a violinist!!

I love potatoes. I couldn't have just one, so I don't bother having any.

What if there was a potato with half the carbs of usual potatoes?

See above post and get googling :)

Really? Is it Vivaldi? I've never ever seen them, the potato list I found says they are best for mashing and boiling. Are they any good for roast and baking and chips (with vinegar of course!) ?

To be honest I would still eat too many, unless they don't taste that nice?

I tried reducing the portions, using my trusty meter.
But the results are depressing.

Half a small portion of pub or cafe chips work. Or 1 roastie, buried in a huge Sunday dinner. And 1 raw carrot.

I found that 1/4 pack of Sainsburys Crispy Potato Slices was okay for me. I expected them to really spike me but have been pleasantly surprised so far

I grew Vivaldi spuds a few years ago. It was pre diagnosis so I have no idea how they affected my bg compared to other spuds. We always roasted them in olive oil with rosemary and thyme.

I don't miss potatoes so wouldn't bother with them now. Will be planting rhubarb in the redundant potato patch this year :)

@Sid Bonkers Is it a violinist and potato none of us have heard of then? My favourite potato is Desiree, I expect that's the worst of the lot!

I do think it's a shame that information gets lost after a few years, it's senseless having to keep 're-inventing the wheel' every year or so.

Yes Vivaldi potatoes are said to be around half the carbs of other non waxy potatoes. Which theoretically means twice as many/much for the same carb reaction.

Unfortunately they are not as common as the more usual potatoes in our supermarkets but I buy them when I see them.

Although I am so used to eating 2 or at most 3 small roasties, 3 or 4 halves of new potatoes or a handful of chips that even when I do buy them I rarely eat any more as mealtimes have become second nature to me now.

Thank you. I'll look out for them in future. :)

I will and always have , depending on the veggie meal of course , a small portion of root vegetables ...even put parsnips in soup sometimes ...
And would never suggest otherwise ....individual choice and health needs for all .....

This thread just inspired me to use up all the leftover veg, a sweet potato, leafy end of a leek, an onion, a parsnip, a couple of carrots, half a cauli, a few French beans, boiled in a stock cube and some instant gravy powder, and tomato concentrate, and half a can of corned beef thrown in at the end to dissolve away.
Mine served with a splash of chlli sauce.
I know from experience this should be fine.

I've just started on a low carb diet and today for lunch I left off the roasties but had sprouts, spring greens, broccoli and carrots. Sugar after 2.5 hrs was 6.7.

Will try swede next week

6.7 ? You're doing really well. Keep it up :)

Anyone given things like potatoes long rooted veg up to
the point you have 'lost all taste or cravings for them' ?
I have - simply don't miss them at all now .

I just stick with what works with 'me' and my BG levels .
Do my own veggie casserole concoctions/stews with what works for me .
What I love the taste of and what loves my lower BG ranges too .
Without heavy spikes or sending my BG levels soaring skywards .

How long did it take for the cravings to go Anna? I still want potatoes sometimes - in any form (except vodka) ;)

The first thing I gave up were potatoes and parsnips because they really raised my BG now I don't miss them at all. I do eat carrots onions Swede turnip leek and beetroot, all grow underground but do not affect me at all. I must add that when I first came on the forum and heard all the talk of underground veg and carbs I was a little afraid of them for a while but once I started testing I found I can eat them with no effect on my BG so I think it's all an individual thong

From about a good year of time /10months probably .
It was a gradual thing I went through .

Kept turning to the things (veggies) I loved the taste of .
And what loved me - in terms of my BG levels :joyful:
