Are you a person of faith?

I absolutely agree, but essentially that is not how paganism defines itself , but is certainly a part of it for some

True, but sometimes in life, when there is nobody you can tell, nobody to talk to, you reach out somewhere, for something, my meaning is not a ' human form' as such.
Sometimes belief in our selves can be crushed beyond belief and then some need a stronger crutch for support and to lean on.
I have some lovely friends, who are in the Salvation Army, who open their doors as it's open house to all, always fun to be around and we can have a good laugh and a joke, two of them took me out for my birthday meal, but they don't badger me about not being a 'church goer.'
 
I feel religion is designed to keep people away from God.
 
Problem is that the supreme being made us, he gave us free will. This means that whenever he gives us a path to enlightenment/heaven/etc, man with his free will takes it and founds a religion which says, I am the one and true religion and tries to convert/kill the **** out of the other religions.
So religions are like a cancer that grows on spirituality and can turn corruption from good flesh!
 
100% Alisonjane10, though I must add (for everyone else who reads this) my beliefs are my business. It would be very
wrong of me to even contemplate pushing my beliefs onto anyone else, and I wish more Christians would do the same.
It's a different matter altogether of course, if someone like yourself makes the initial request for information.
As you'll know, Christianity in the UK is all but gone now which, from my point of view, is rather sad however, fortunately we
all have been given the free choice to believe that which we choose to believe in. Every single person has that free choice.

And if somebody thinks I'm nuts because of my beliefs well, so be it, it ain't doing me any harm.
Sticks and stones and all that.

Incidentally, if someone asks me my "Religion", due to that being my business I always reply by saying,
"I'm a believer in, and follower of, the teachings of a man with the initials "JC".
If they wish to know more, then I'll tell them.

OK, getting back to your hopes of having a chat with someone like-minded.
Due to my current health, I could not be relied upon to help you, but here's

Maybe true belief in self is who 'God' is ...... there is no proof God exists but neither is there any proof we have a 'soul' - both are intangible. Equally there is no proof He doesn't exist

But this & other universes came from somewhere - even if you believe in the 'Big Bang' the atoms and molecules came from 'somewhere' to fuel it

It is regretful that many religions practice the "our God is better than your God" routine and one can speculate the reasons for this, undoubtedly ingrained by some kind of deep rooted inferiority somewhere alone the way. What is important is that through free will, individuals have to choice to believe, or not; and others should respect that choice.

I believe in some existance (life ??) after death, not just because of biblical teachings but also as an engineer and having read many science books, Einsteins laws have never been shown to be wrong, and one of those states that "energy can neither be destroyed or created" -- if our life energy is our 'soul' then something must happen to it on death ...... it can't simply evaporate into nothing

I fall in between ... certainly not an atheist, not a churchgoer either and probably closer to a "light" agnostic ......

There are always two imponderables for me.

1. If the universe is expanding what is it expanding into? We do not understand boundaries so what is on the other side?

2. If we believe in a "God" then great .... but who created him?

I guess we'll find out at some point but I understand the need for people to reach out for an answer be it accurate or otherwise.
 
I can't get my head round people who believe it all came about by accident .... no design .... but at the same time think this accident went on to create somewhere much nicer than this where we can't get to until we die.
The belief that it all came about by accident and everything came from nothing is a quasi religious belief in it's own way with miracles thrown in along the way too.

The following is actually deemed to be scientific teaching .... scientific theory .... it's not it's religioun and it's God is time.

Nothing blows up and creates everything.
Time space matter.
There's no space ... nowhere for the explosion to take place.
There's no time .... no moment for it to happen.
We can supposedly see this explosion still taking place through a thing called red shift.
All the debris from the explosion is still hurtling outwards.
Everything big or small is made of atoms.
Some of the atoms created in this explosion accidentally organise themselves in such a manner that they build a huge telescope and look back at the continuing explosion and say .... wow would you look at that!
This group of atoms replicate many many times and decide that when they fall apart and return to being a jumbled mess of dust there is of course somewhere else designed and waiting that is carpeted in clouds and deep filled sofas with perfect weather and no fun where the energy that was holding all the particles together can go to where they will last forever and ever.

Before you ask .... I have a very strong belief in God.
 
RRB - thank you for your positive comments about your Salvation Army friends as I have similar. The Salvation Army is my church and I too enjoy.
 
Hi everyone.
Some of the responses to my question show little respect for those with a different view from their own. The subject matter is controversial for many I guess. I'll reiterate my earlier message if I may:

Thank you to everyone who has replied to my thread. My question appears to show what a diverse bunch we all are. I think a healthy respect for each other's point of view and opinion is necessary...whatever that point of view is. I will continue to pursue my faith in my own way & will never judge those with a completely different mindset to me.

Interestingly the Bible doesn't say we have a soul.
It say's when God breathed life into Adam he became a living soul.
So maybe we need to understand better what .... we .... are?
What am I?
What are we?
We've learned a lot about where we are but maybe not enough about who and what we are.
Which posts have been vehement by the way?

Thanks RRB. I guess my question has created some interesting, and subjective, points of view. I appreciate that people have bothered to respond, even if our opinions are poles apart. And yeah, a touchy subject...but debated well overall.

I think everyone has been very polite.
I happen to believe in creation by a creator.
In today's world it's easy to be laughed at for saying that but that's actually where most of the evidence points.
Hence my post about the so called scientific approach to it all being an accident with no intelligent direction or design being more faith based than science based.
There is absolutely nothing scientific about everything coming from nothing.
