"I had a sterilisation operation. Over the next few months it shot up from 7st to 13st 7lb"
Although I'm not surprised, GPs seem to think weight gain shouldn't happen. However, if you start looking into lady's experiences, it's varied, some gain, some lose, some stay the same.
"No one could explain it – thyroid function tests came back normal and doctors said there was no medical reason."
I'm especially interested in this statement because my major weight gain occurred when I first moved in with my wife and then when I was prescribed Rosiglitazone. The hospital dietician put the first gain down to the salt in WW ready meals. The weight gain experienced taking Rosiglitazone couldn't be explained by my GP at the time, in fact he prescribed citilapram for the anxiety of ballooning up to 27st. It started to reverse when I had to stop taking it because it was affecting my liver function.
"In desperation I cut out everything apart from fruit and vegetables but I was hungry and binged on takeaway curries."
Binging on curry, so not cutting out everything.
"Feeling tired and bloated, I started drinking cans of cola to keep me going but soon I was having 30 a day."
30? I'm surprised that anyone would drink over 10 litres of anything every day. If the cola was meant to relieve tiredness and bloating ????? IBS? There's a surprise!
"Completing a half marathon was one ambition, so I decided to try running."
I'm not knocking any form of exercise but carrying all those extra pounds, running may not be the wisest. When I first saw a consultant about my arthritic knees he asked me a question based on the people that he saw. "Did you play rugby, football, a racquet sport or jog. 3 out of 4 wasn't bad. As I say, no knocking exercise but something that doesn't ruin your knees would be good. I predict she'll need replacements at some point.
"so I went to see Dr Peter Foley, a GP at my surgery"
Stroke of luck, he "discovered" low carb while studying for his MSc in Sport and Exercise Medicine.
This wasn't meant to be negative and I'm delighted that she has found the solution. I'm just aware that she seems to have gone from one extreme to the other. Something good had to happen.
