Hi
I have rcvd literature on possibly taking part in a test, regarding asprin and omega 3, its all above board, it will involve some assistance from my own surgery at specific times. They are contacting people across the board who have diabetes and I wondered if anyone else who logs on has received the literature too and what your thoughts are on the subject.
Personally I believe that anything that will help people in the future has got to be worth while, though I don't just have myself to think about (in the here and now) and will be checking what the possible risks may be, if any, if taking part. It may be that I would not be suitable material for it as other health factors have to be taken into account.

Hi grum.

I have been on Aspirin and Omega 3 capsules for several years so as far as I am concerned there is nothing new here ? Do you have any more information about the 'test', who is running it, the aims and protocols etc.

I would be interested to know about this as the results of using both are pretty well documented at present.

Ken.

Hi Ken

Hi grum.

Thanks for that. I understand better now. I have had Cardivascular problems so that is why I have been on them for years. The trial is to see if they are beneficial to Diabetics who do not have CV problems .

An extract:
Diabetes is common, and increases the risks of suffering heart attacks or strokes. Aspirin is known to reduce the risk of these complications in people with circulatory problems, whether or not they have diabetes. But, aspirin has not been shown to be beneficial in individuals with diabetes who do not have vascular disease, and few use it routinely.
The ASCEND randomised trial should provide the first reliable evidence about the effects of aspirin and of omega-3 fatty acids in diabetes. ASCEND aims to recruit at least 10,000 people with diabetes (either type 1 or type 2) who do not have known vascular disease. ASCEND volunteers wil be randomly allocated to take 100mg aspirin daily or placebo (dummy) and 1 gram capsules containing naturally occurring omega-3 fatty acids ("fish-oils") or placebo capsules containing olive oil. If favourable results emerge, this could lead to the widespread use of these treatments in diabetes, and avoidance of many thousands of heart attacks and strokes.

Here is a link to the application form if you are interested in taking part in the trial.
