asked if i was type 1 by nurse after being type 2 for 10 years!!!

Hi All ,
Saw a diabetic nurse for my annual check, came away anooyed and upset, was asked by nurse if i was type 1, !!
I was diagnosed as type 2, 10 years ago, been on Isulin most of the 10 years, nurse said she couldnt help with insulin ?? i would need to see the other diabetic nurse in the practise, she did not give me the results of my recent bood test, nor test the sample i had taken in !! I was only in 15 mins not the alloted half hour. I have had 5 night time hypos in the last 10 days and my reading are high , to day so far they have been 15.5 15.9 15.6 ant thats with injecting 44mls this morning, I am now worried and depressed, not normally like this . I think i’ve mentioned this on previous posts. If medical staff are giving the correct advice to patients then the HbA1c level for all patients will fall.

In my case it went up 2 months after diagnosis to 126. I then started to read up on it in my own time and is now 31.
 
Have you been tested for t1? Just wondered.

When do you inject and how much, you mentioned a morning dose?
 
I'd have gone straight to the desk and asked to see the other nurse at the soonest opportunity, and before I left the building if possible, or failing that a doctor with some knowledge of diabetes - if such a thing exists - or for a referral to someone able to give you the advice needed to stop you bouncing between low and high.
There is such a thing as a duty of care.
 

Talk to PALS and/or the practice manager.

The service you were given is way below that you are entitled to.
 
Hi. Can you let us know your BMI and are you low-carbing? I would ask to be changed from twice-a-day mixed insulin to MDI (Basel/Bolus) which gives much better control and will avoid many/any hypos. Asking for the tests for T1 might help but won't change the right treatment. GAD tests are very unreliable some years after diagnosis but a c-peptide would show your insulin production level but again wouldn't affect the right treatment. I'm listed as T2 (stupid NHS GP) but know I'm a LADA but on Basal/Bolus with good control. I do control the carbs. My c-peptide showed low'ish insulin production and GAD negative. I'm lucky as my surgery has good diabetic nurse support.
 
She was probably a healthcare assistant.
 
Don't be angry as you need all the help that you can get so next time , ask for you to be seen by a nurse who knows you and your condition preferably it would be better
 


Hi I have foind my test results from last year (which i actually had done in australia) whilst i was there helping my daughter and my young grandchildren after a nasty break up with her partner)it was by no means a holiday

There i ws given it all my results after a diabetic review in a proper booklet) every thing from weight measurements my pulse ecg, etc none of which i had done recenlty at my surgery.
I was able to see a dietcian, podiatrist an diabetic specialist, the specialsit put me on Lantus once a day in the evening and novo rapid but of course i cannot have them over here so am back on novo 30 mix that i had been on for 9 years. Also saw a Diabetic educator once a month or she would phone, i realise that all this is not posible over here on the nhs.My daughter paid the costs for me.

Still not had the results of my recent blood test. wheni rang my surgery the next day to ask for it, i was told by the receptionist that she could not tell me as it said "to dicuss a review with nurse" so still did not get results!!!

I have received a letter asking me ot ring a referral Support Service, it said for a specialist "Diabetic Medicine" assessment, i rang all i was asked was which hospital i wanted to attend, obviously i picked my nearest ! i now have to wait for a letter with an appoinment which may be in 10-12 weeks time !!

I have still not been able to get an appointment to see a doctor or another diabetic nurse, the earliest i can sdee a doctor is towards the end of march, i have quite honestly gievn up for now.
 
I get my test results within days from my GP's website after completing a form and showing photo id and authorisation from a doctor. All surgeries were supposed to sign up to this but some haven't yet. Go to the surgery website and see if they have the system in place. If you can't see it please ask at the surgery.
 
You can get your test results here in the UK.

There are several ways to do so:
You can ask (repeatedly, if necessary) during the appointment, and write them down.
You can ask for a printout from the nurse, the doc or the receptionist. Some surgeries charge for the cost of paper and ink.
You can ring the surgery and ask for them over the phone. If the receptionist is reluctant to give them to you, then ask to speak to someone who is qualified to give them out, even if it means that they will have to call you back.
You can register online with your surgery (ask at reception for the forms and procedure to arrange this). Ask for the level of online access that gives you test results. Some surgeries need you to see a doc to arrange this. Others don't.

There is absolutely no reason why you cannot get hold of your test results, although I recommend that you use polite persistence to get them, rather than confrontation or complaints.
 
I will also tag in @urbanracer since he has recently changed from fixed insulin to MDI (multiple daily injections of basal and bolus). I know that he had been asking for the change for a long time, and is aware of the NICE guidelines that should guide your health team's decisions.
 

Before you see the a specialist, have a read of the NICE guidelines for T1 diabetics. All the info you need is available on line.

A basal/bolus insulin regime is the official guideline for treating T1 and the recommended basal insulin is now Detemir. I have just been given a Lantus biosimilar called Abasaglar (presumably because it's cheaper).

Go to your appointment armed with the right information as you may encounter some push back as I did!
