Right guys I’m desperate to lose weight. I need to lose a stone in 5 weeks and 5 days, I’m going to my step daughters wedding and want to look my best. My sugars are also completely out of control so I also need to get them down. My idea is to come on here and post my weight every Monday and shame myself into making sure I lose some weight and don’t “fall off the wagon”. You are welcome to join me.

Today I weigh 12 stone 0.75lbs

How are you approaching diet and blood glucose control now? Most of us here have used low carb or keto to achieve excellent results in both. See the links in my signature for further info. Perhaps we can offer suggestions to help as well as your accountability posts (no shame here! Positive thoughts positive results and sadly the reverse too)

That’s a tall order in 5 weeks.

First question, what medication are you on for your diabetes? Is it anything other than metformin?

Second question, do you have an idea about how you’d like to lose the weight?

Not sure whether you wanted advice on what to eat, but I’ll give some anyway, I’d not suggest any ‘crash’ diets or crazy regimes (which might end up with you putting it all back on), but rather use your motivation to make changes which will help you to manage your diabetes and your weight for the long term. Having said that, with a bit of fortune you could lose a decent amount in that timeframe,

My suggestion would be to lower carbohydrates as far as you can (taking what I said above into account), but that will depend to some extent what medication you’re on.

Hi I’m on metformin, gliclazide and today ALOGLIPTIN has been added. I believe that my sugars are out of control due to stress not particularly my diet, although I can be a nightmare for chocolate ( any alternatives on this would be appreciated) . I’m going to diet sensibly and exercise as much as I can

Ah, with that medication you’d need to proceed with care with my suggestion in order to avoid hypos. A more cautious approach would be better.

Sorry what is KETO?

It’s a way of eating that switches the body from using carbohydrates as fuel to using fat. It usually involves eating 20g of carbs a day or less (some can achieve it on a higher amount of carbs).

I’d advise taking a look at this website for ideas on what to eat: https://www.dietdoctor.com/

Hello and welcome,

I completely understand wanting to lose weight for a wedding. I have just had my son's wedding and had nightmares for weeks that I wouldn't fit in the dress- it was fitted. I did fit it thank goodness. So I get it.

Having said that- many type 2s find going much lower carb is an effective way of losing weight. I lost about 30 kg but have a lot more to lose. Many also find going much lower carb also helps the blood sugar levels. BUT if you are on medication- and you are, you need to be careful to avoid hypos. You will need to be careful to slowly reduce your carb intake and consult with your doctor if the results are your levels decrease.

I also have found stress affects my levels. It find the affect is 2 ways- directly on the levels and also on my response to stress which is to comfort eat which makes it harder to keep very low carb. So it's a lose lose situation for me.

So I really understand where you are coming from. I would suggest slowly reducing your carb intake while testing very regularly.

Enjoy the wedding- I took comfort in the fact that as the mother of the groom I was not that important and no-one was really worried about what I looked like :)

Hi

There is a post that some of us use to report our weight on a Friday though not Monday. It’s also not about shame but rather support. I think that’s a better way of looking at it

1 stone is a bit above 6kg. Generally a recommendation of safe weight loss is about 1kg a week maximum and quite often it’s a bit faster at the beginning with water weight, so your aim is a challenge but potentially achievable without dangerous dieting so don’t push yourself too much please, sustainable loss is better than a crash diet

Personally, I counted my carbs and my calories and also increased my cardio. That combination, for me, resulted in about 1kg a week. Also as others say, medication is a risk for hypo especially with crashing diets so be wary and look after yourself

I understand the desire to get better blood sugar control and reduce medication and think the advice others have given could really help.

But for what it’s worth, if I was getting married I’d just be delighted my parents were there, regardless of what they weighed (especially after this last year!) They’re people to me, not body shapes.
