Aspartame/sweeteners

Apparently in 2003 a consultant wrote on a letter to my then GP that I maybe allergic to aspartame...

The note wasn't put on my file or discussed with me.

Obviously as a diabetic during the past 12 years I have had times of diet cokes. Diet ginger beers, sweeteners in cakes etc.

Having just found out this info.... My question is.. If I may have an allergy to aspartame (there are no tests to prove this).. Could I also have allergy to "stevia" or are they completely different?

I can certainly relate to "aspartame" affecting me.. As apparently it gives numbess of limbs, restless leg and fibromyalgia symptoms and more that I have had investigated and problems with for 15 years.

If I am indeed to avoid aspartame.. Would it apply to all sweeteners?? Or is it just going to be a suck n see situation now?
 
I don't know what the scientific basis might be for your answer, but I'm sensitive to all alternative sweeteners including Aspartame, saccharine, stevia etc. I haven't tried erythritol yet which many people with sensitivities can tolerate better, only because I don't need sweetener enough in my life to throw any more money away to find out.

I've eaten things unsweetened for so long now that my taste has simply changed and if something does need sweetening, I can get away with little enough that I just use maple syrup, honey or actual sugar.
 
I'm thinking to eliminate anything. Then just now realised I munch on sugar free chewing gum!! Just looked at the **** in that!! Omg...

I think my best option is just to add honey or even a little fruit juice..

Looks truly as if my body only accepts natural foods.. It doesn't tolerate ready meals (rarely had these anyway, not for at least 7 + years), no bread etc so now just something else to avoid.

Its just say for some recipes for cakes or eg avocado n dark choc mousse I put in 4 drops of stevia liquid.. I'm not sure on some recipes like that one what to use instead.. I'm type 1 so I can bolus for sugar so that doesn't really affect me.. Just that the avocado recipe gave stevia instead.

Think I can see a few cooking disasters ahead of me for a little while!! -lol:)

I'm coming to the same conclusion myself, moreso since I started eliminating more carbs. My husband and I were talking as we got ready for bed last night, I've decided that wheat troubles me more than I ever realised - because I'm having so little now, it throws it into sharp relief when you do have some. I seem to be fine with the one slice of bread I have at breakfast, but anything more than that causes me difficulty.

Think I can see a few cooking disasters ahead of me for a little while!! -lol:)
I've had a few of those recently. I've tried various of the bread-like alternatives with almond flour etc. and they're simply hideous.

I suppose the thing for you to try is to eliminate the sweeteners for a while and see if you're better without them, but if it doesn't make any difference you could continue using them.
 
I know this is 8 yrs later but aspartame kicks off my asthma.

Strangely I am one of the few in the country who is allergic to Stevia. Only discovered it after M&S changed their full sugar versions of their cordials to contain stevia to satisfy the sugar tax. Why they changed the formula after all the years since the sugar tax came into effect I don’t know because they originally stood with customer choice. Apparently my diabetes nurse said a little sugar is actually good for you even with diabetes.
