Hi everyone,

I can't seem to get out the 11.0 to 15.0 nightly blood ranges for some reason.

Been a type 2 for 6 years and am on a low dose of glipizide.

I can't take any form of metraformin because of the severe side effects it gave me.

I was on sitagliptin but again severe side effects.

I'm wondering if it's the carbs getting me as I have potatoes about 5 or 6 small ones a day.

I've been trying different things but nothing works and it's worrying me, also the tablets choice is pretty much almost run out too :(

I would suggest you give serious consideration going low carb or keto to get control of your blood glucose.

The potatoes you are eating are doing you no favours.

I have severe Type 2 which I manage on 20g of carbs. When I was still injecting Novarapid insulin I could eat potatoes but could easily spike over 12. That's with a large injection of insulin. Now I am not on insulin anymore I would probably get an over 20 spike.

Before insulin I stayed mostly in the high 20s on a healthy eatwell plate diet of starchy carbs and low fat. I achieved remission and more normal BS with a keto diet and much higher fat and was able to come off insulin.

Just a suggestion, start a food diary, everything you eat, write it down after a week or so cross match it with your blood sugars, then start to substitute things like potatoes and other carb / sweet things, monitoring your blood sugars.

Hi there @Orlando00 - I'd agree with @alf_Josiah , regarding the food diary, with blood glucose scores alongside, as a means of pinpointing any specific foods that might be causing issues.

As a matter of interest are you otherwise well? Colds or just being under the weather can push the numbers up a bit, and of course, there may have been additional temptations around in recent times.

My only other comment would be that at a recent presentation by a Diabetes Endo, he stated there are over 400 potential medication options for T2 diabetes - before insulin is considered. Obviously that means 400 combinations, so Metformin would be included in that 400, but don't be downhearted at the prospect of tablet options running out. There are likely other things that could be tried, if you can't get to the bottom of things.

Hi @Orlando00 ,

Yeah, those potatoes could well be the problem. They're carby, and carbs are turned to glucose once ingested. And as the proof is in the pud: Try going without for a week or two, and see what that gets you. Just DO NOT replace the spuds with rice, pasta, cereal or bread, because those are just as bad, carbwise... I have a feeling your BG will go down considerably. ;)

@Orlando00 my Type 2 brother rarely takes potatoes or his blood sugar goes high.

You say you take 6 "small" potatoes. I wonder what weight this would be.

I tend to cake 2 small potatoes with my evening meal and weigh them so that I can be more exact with my carb counting. 2 small potatoes is usually around 90g which works out to be 15g of carbohydrate. This means your 6 potatoes will be around 45g of carbs. That is a lot of carbs for one meal.

Others have suggested you cut out the potatoes. I know I would find that very difficult but it may be the only answer. The only other thing I could suggest is to cut down the number of potatoes you eat.

If you do go down the low carb route, cutting out potatoes, pasta, rice, etc, make sure you do low carb AND high fat.
