Hello, I am a type 2 diabetic on metformin I have managed to get into pre-diabetic status last June (june2017) after only being diagnosed in October 2015. I am generally fit and healthy, only I am now struggling to get the last bit of weight off and I have been told about Atkins shakes.
Are they ok for a diabetic to use to aid in the help of weight loss?
Many Thanks xx

I have used Atkins products before and yes, they are low carb, so should be suitable for a diabetic.
Now after following the LCHF diet for several years, eating real fresh food, the Atkins products taste far too sweet for me.
What diet do you normally follow and are you on any medication ? Do you monitor your glucose levels with a meter ? Also do you do any exercise.. mine is just walking and dancing but it does make a difference.

Thank you for your help, I am on metformin 500mg x 3 I do exercise, i do a tremendous amount of walking with work and i also do aqua fit and cardio. I dont test my blood as much now perhaps once a month now. i have been following a healthy eating plan and coupled this with part of slimming world diabetic plan too. I have lost 3 stone in the last 9 months and kept that off I would like another 2 stone off but I am struggling to get this last stubborn bit moved.

Personly I think keeping to "A New Atkins For a New You" is a better option then the shakes as I like "real food". (But the shakes would work well with something like the 5:2 diet where you have very low calorie and carbs for 2 days each week.)

Personly I think slimmingworld is far too "high carb" for anyone with Type2, but as they do get everyone to give up sugar, they can be a step in the right direction for many people. I don't know of any nationwide diet support groups that use low carb, however, remember that the likes of slimmingworld make their money from people keep coming back.

Looks like you're doing really well. Usually that last bit of weight is the most difficult to lose. I agree with ringi that Slimming World can be quite high carb. It might be worth considering surprising your body with a very low cab diet like Atkins for a while and see if that shifts the weight. Has your SW diet been good for your BG results ?

Thank you, I have been researching ( a wee bit anal I know lol) the Atkins shakes and all have been positive results, I like the idea of the 5:2 diet too, I shall have a read and I do think that will be the way I will go.
Thank you xx

I have struggled in the beginning with my results peaking, which Is something I got upset with, I agree with ringi, the atkins and the 5:2 diet looks like it will be helpful and also help keep my BG in check too.
Thank you for your support xx

If you do 5:2 remember that on the none diet days you still need to avoid ALL sugar including "natural sugar" and limited at least processed carbs (bread and breakfast cereal etc) if not all carbs. I would go as far as to say you need to "eat to your meter" on the none diet days so that no meal increases your BG by more than 2 (2hr after the meal), then use your diet days to speed up the weight loss. (As the diet days remove the fat from your liver, you may be able to eat more none processed carbs on the other days.)

But lots (but not all) people find that by "eating to their meter" they lose weight anyway.....

I see the Atkins shakes as a great took, but would recommend everyone to start with.
  • No added sugar
  • Nothing that contains much natural sugar (limit to say 5g per day)
  • No breakfast cereal
  • No bread as part of your day to day diet
  • No pasta
  • Think about other carbs
  • Eat to your meter
Before considering any "diet". Note that replacing a normal UK breakfast with an egg-based cooked breakfast sorts out most of the above list. Then maybe use an Atkins shake for lunch, if you don't like taking a salad, along with a normal cooked dinner but without the carbs.
