my average reading is about 12 with diet and exercise am type 2 on metformin only been just over two weeks is this ok also my eyesight a bit blurred any ideals please

Hi Andy

Ideal is to be between 4-7 before eating, rising only to 10 at absolute max at 1 hour point and then back down again. within the 2 hours This however might be figures for type 1 and Im sure some of our brillian and knowledgeable type 2's will be along soon. Also, its is gold standard but as a newly diagnosed person try not to stress about it because once your meds kick in you should start to see some changes. Even though I am insulin, I still had readings that were too high 2 weeks after diagnosis

However, in saying that an average of 12 is not great, and you should probably think about trying to get it down. Things like bread, pasta, cereals, cakes, pastry etc can all have bad effects on us poor diabetics though people can tolerate different things.
What kind of things do you eat, as this has lots of impact on your sugars?
What advice have you had from the Docs, do you even see a Doc for your diabetes?

Let us know and we can give you more specific advice. Also, the blurred vision is very common when your sugars are coming back down closer to 'normal' levels. You might find that you were running higher sugars for a while and now they are dropping this is causing blurred vision

It usually clears up in a few weeks . Mines went away in 3 weeks, other take a couple of months. Most people are recommended not to get an eye test until at least 3 months after diagnosis because of this and its blurred vision that actually leads to the diagnosis, so it shouldnt be permanent.

Lilibet is right on the target numbers. that's what the medics say. I personally prefer to remain below 6 at all times. Non-diabetics are usually around 5 even after meals, but may go up a little if they eat a lot of carbs, then. The nearer you can keep to that 5, the better your health is likely to be and the fewer side effects. For a T2, that pretty much means restricted carbs and medication. Meformin can cause upset digestive system, but otherwise is a well tried safe medication. Most other t2 medications can make weight a problem

i have tryed to eat good things fruit nuts staying away from things with high sugar, i have also started running and swimming i test myself each morning and sometimes after a meal (2 hours)is this the best time to test :?:

Hi Andy

As a type 2 you still have some of your own insulin so might be able to tolerate foods a type 1 cant (though carbs affect us all). As Hana says, what I quoted is standard, some people try to remain under 8 at two hours and this might be worth aiming for ultimately but for now the important thing for you do to is test. So I would recommend that you test before you eat (see what your starting point is) then test 1 and 2 hours after eating to see what food affects you. Over time you will learn and not have to test so much but good management does require intensive work at first.

Have a look at this site. Alan is a T2. He is very disciplined and obv diagnosed longer than you but might get you a step for a hint.

PS Fruit and nuts are fine, depending on what fruit and nuts. Try to look at the carbohydrate count on what you eat, get a sense of the difference between them all. A banana will be worse for bg than raspberries, peanuts worse then brazil nuts. However,TESTING is the key to your own parameters
