I've decided to get the aviva insight pump. But I have a question: how does the 24hr insulin work with it?
Thanks

It doesn't.

Pumps don't use long acting insulin. They use fast acting insulin only. The basal insulin is delivered by using tiny doses of fast acting insulin continuously.

You can programme hourly amounts but can start at say 00.00 to 04.15 and have another block from 04.15 to 06.45 and then another 06.45 to 10.30 etc.

You can also set up different profiles if you work shifts or for weekends/school/ work etc.

Your background insulin is what you will programme in to it. However it is all a quick acting insulin from one vial.

Your consultant and diabetes nurse will set you up and will help you initially.

Your nurse will advice you what to do about your last mdi background dose.

I have an Insight, @CarysMia2711 , and it's a great pump.

Pumps use only fast-acting insulin. There is a constant drip drip drip of basal delivery, and you take bolus insulin as and when you need it for meals or snacks - but this all comes from the pump's one supply of rapid-acting insulin.

I found it a big strange to get my head around when I was reading up on how pumping works (I can recommend the Walsh book 'Pumping Insulin', and the INPUT website, to name but two sources of fab info), but I consider my basal insulin a steady drip of a tap 24 hours a day, and my bolus as turning the tap on to give me bolus insulin to cover meals, snacks and correction doses. BUT it IS all the same type of insulin, just delivered in a different way.

:)
