Avoiding Highs after Exercise

Finally decided to get some regular exercise into my life.
Started doing 1/2 hour exercise first thing in the morning, as this is supposed to be the best time of day to burn fat (as there's no food in blood stream).
Does anybody else find they go sky high after exercise? For example this morning started off with normal blood levels, and tested after exercise, it was 16.0, then tested a few hours later and it was 22
I could give insulin to correct it, but insulin gains weight, so surely there is no point exercising if we just have to give insulin for it???
Can anyone enlighten me as to the best way to do it WITHOUT having to inject more insulin, and WITHOUT having to eat a load of carbs later on!! I'm trying to lose weight not gain weight!!!

Eat breakfast............plain and simple :)

Your body has to get its fuel from somewhere, so if you don't eat then it will get glucose from the livers glycogen stores, no insulin on board to counteract then it's inevitable that bg will rise.

If you exercise soon after breakfast then it's advisable to give a reduced dose and test accordingly to get the ratio right, good luck!!!

Thanks! Would it have to be a carby breakfast? Or would Meusli and yoghurt be substantial? So if I eat breakfast and deliver insulin prior to exercising, this should avoid highs afterwards?

I don't know the carbs in Muesli, I only eat 40-50g of carbs for breakfast most days and can exercise quite easily afterwards.

As for guaranteeing no high's afterwards, well that will only depend on you getting the insulin dose right taking into account the duration of exercise and carbs in your food, the only way of getting this right is by rigerous bg testing and experience I'm afraid.

Sorry to be so thick, but so if I had 20g of carbs for breakfast, and did a 1/2 hour mix of walking and jogging, would i do less insulin for my breakfast than the carb ratio would suggest or would i do more insulin!? Is it the glucose from the breakfast my body needs when i exercise, or insulin that it needs? (or both!?)
Thought I was being really good this morning but my BG has been in the high 20's most the day so i've had to do correction boluses!!

I DID IT!!
It was a case of doing my morning basal insulin before I went out! I always normally do my morning basal at 8am. But because it was so early like half 5 / 6am, I hadn't done my basal. But I tried doing my basal before I went out... and hey presto, its dropped down instead of shooting amongst the stars!  :D

Great news, pleased you got the problem sorted

Thank you!! I was getting so down and got all pessimistic and thought I'll never be able to exercise, etc, etc... Just HAD to prove my body wrong!! :D Yippeeee so nice to be able to eat a sweet or two and not have to do insulin for it :) Now I just need to tweak it a bit to make sure I dont get the lows after!!
