BARIATIC surgery

Quite a few people have had bariatic surgery. There are also lots of people who have reduced their weight using a LCHF (low carb high fat) diet and intermittent fasting. Check out the video by Jason Fung linked in my forum signature - the two big lies of type 2 diabetes. Jason has had a lot of success with overweight diabetic patients using fasting and a lower carb diet.

Please has anyone had gastric sleeve or bypass surgery and what was the experience like?

I've only been through the process of being considered for surgery, although I do know 2 people, one had a sleeve and the other a bypass.

As I was eating less than a bariatric patient was expected to eat and my BMI was below a certain threshold I was told that I have a weight problem and not an eating problem, so no surgery for me and I'm not bothered to be honest, it wasn't for me. That makes me think that in High Wycombe and possibly Bucks, you can only get bariatric surgery on the NHS if you have an eating problem and a BMI over a certain threshold.

My friend who had the sleeve (self financed) did lose some weight, but she found that although the volume of food reduced she could cheat and eat things with high calories. In fact when I looked into gastric bands and attended the local support group I discovered that people were liquidising ice cream and chocolate and for some reason wondering why they weren't losing loads of weight. That was another reason I wasn't upset about not being suitable, I don't eat chocolate or ice cream.

My friend who had bypass surgery did extremely well, but he's the sort of person who doesn't do things by halves, probably why his love of food previously led to his problem, eating and weight. He's a totally different person now although I think he's looking at surgery to remove excess skin. Apologies if too much information, but that's his experience.

Hi @Maryam1904 , the lovely @ickihun is preparing for bariatric surgery which I think is scheduled for early next year - although she hasn't had it yet I'm certain she will be able to provide you with some insight into her journey.

:)

Hi @Maryam1904 . I'm on insulin for my diabetes.
I'm just about to start tier 4. Just out to drop school run. I will post properly on return.
Feel free to message me.

Hi @Maryam1904, I had bariatric surgery on the NHS and have lost 8 stone. Best thing I ever did. Have also had self financed surgeries to deal with excess skin to various parts of my body.
I did hope that it would completely banish my diabetes but have just been diagnosed with Reactive Hypoglycaemia but am managing that with LCHF diet. It seems to be happening to a small number of bypass patients.
I've struggled with my weight all my life, was a "chubby" youngster but after having children my weight rocketed to 18st 2lbs, now 10st 1lb and in size 10-12 clothes.
Would recommend surgery but you've still got to put plenty work into it

I was going to have bariatric surgery but then decided against it. I weighed over 24 stone and I have to say I went on the LCHF diet and within a year I have lost over 10 stone upto date. At Christmas I was taking 55 units of tresiba insulin at the the end of June my hba1c was 43 I am no longer on insulin the only thing I take is metformine Iand diet my blood readings are still prediabetic and not due to have my hba1c done until December. I have to say that I didn't do much exercise because of osteoarthritis plus no one knows why but one day I was making a drink when my right leg gave way and I had to learn to walk again because my leg wouldn't do what my brain was telling it to. Try the diet first and only have surgery as a last resort believe me if I can do it with having little control you can do it. My daughter has never none me at this weight and she's 34yrs old. Go on give it a try. You'd probably loose more on diet rather than surgery.

That's absolutely brilliant, well done.

My story is similar except when bariatric surgery was first recommended I was already eating less than the people at the support group were eating after surgery, so a waste of time. I had to go through a second round of being considered to tick all the boxes before progressing to the next stage of investigation. This time I wasn't big enough and my problems weren't to do with eating so rejected. Not sure what the next stage is, personally I don't think there is one. I have to survive on a lot less than my BMR and they haven't a clue. I could ask for amphetamine sulphate but I'd already sound as if I knew too much. Back in the early 1980s you could buy it over the counter in Germany, packaged as a slimming aid for which it was extremely effective.

I have an old friend who did extremely well on bypass and another friend who was less successful with a gastric band.

I couldnt lose on lchf but have lost 3.5 stones since xmas now. On low carb (150g) low fat/medium fat on metformin longterm and orilstat 1-2 tablets a day. Toujeo300 insulin and novarapid injections.
If I could lose 10stones in 1yr I wouldnt do bariatric surgery either.

Funny you should say that. I'm not in favour or against but the stuff we bought in Germany in the early 1980s was a lower dose. If somebody wanted the "high" they'd have to take more and my friends did. I wanted the stuff to last because it was helping me to lose weight which is what it said on the box.

When looking at side effects they come in 3 degrees of severity: Common side effects, infrequent side effects and rare side effects. Fast Heartbeat and heart throbbing come under infrequent, heart attack comes under rare.

I'd be hesitant in the same way I have been hesitant about surgery which also carries a risk. Luckily my surgical team have been top notch and have ensured I was up to surgery, no choice with the laparotomy, my appendix had burst. The 2 TKRs on the other hand could easily have been postponed if the anything was risky.

When my appendix burst in 80s it was open surgery. My scar is 12inches long.
My right ovary was affected by it and reduced fertility for me.
I'll be interested to see if any other damage was caused. Ultrascans don't show any complications but endoscopy procedure may find hernia or something as tummy area swells like a water bed, every night. Furosemide clears it on a morning just for it to return later. Humf!
Swollen tum affects my breathing. Even with 3 inhalers for asthma which must be off GERD.

Hi ask your doctor for a thyroid function test even if your results come back normal challenge them. If your muscles and joints hurt, or if you feel slow and sluggish or tired and you're not loosing weight or even putting it on ask them to treat your symptoms rather than results. It's worth a try I have to say that I take 275mcg daily which is a very hefty dose. Good luck by the way your not taking antidepressants by any chance if you are that could be a reason for your weight if so discuss this with your doctor they are renowned for a lot of issues especially weight. All the best. .

Bariatric surgery is one of the best weight loss surgery nowadays. It helps to lose weight for type 2 diabetes patient.Basically, your stomach will get squeezed in this surgery so that fat will get reduced automatically.Last year my uncle did this and lost his 20 kg of weight. Now he is completely fine.
