There was an article in a national paper the other day about the benefits of Barley as an agent for helping to lower BS obviously an advantage to us if it works. No real detail on how to take it but suggested as a substitute for rice?
Anyone got any comments or ideas on this ?

Hi mate, If you havnt already get yourself a book or Google on the Glycemic Index. This relates to how quickly the glucose hits the blood stream. It is an eye opener once you get your head around it. Im sure one of the dieticians on here can expand more

Hi Stockcar,

Apparently its only certain types of barley that have a lower starch content, not all barley. So please don't anyone get the idea that they can simply replace other cereals with barley and all will be well. The normal barley that we get from shops and supermarkets, and is used in various barley-based products, is very high in starch.

The "good" barley varieties to watch for are Prowashonupana (or Prowash) barley and a new American variety called BGLife Barley.

Thanks Dennis

I was told about this article in good faith by a friend but your excellent reply shows the value of posting on this forum rather than beleiving everything written in the papers. Thanks again for your usual informative info.

Regards
Pete
