I've been T1 for 40 years - now 44. Healthy and fit - eye issues 15 years ago but all sorted. I'm interested in understanding more about basal, fasting & LCHF.

I do high intensity exercise 4/7 nights and eat low carbs after - chicken stir fry with veg as example. My basal seems ok as BG always around 5.0 in mornings. If I fast I rise fast unless I do insulin. I need to do the same insulin whether I eat a banana for breakfast or I don't. Same happens at all times of day.

My basal must be right as mornings are good. Why do I rise if I don't eat? Anyone know? Given I've been T1 for so long I should know but I don't.

LCHF - I can't do the HF as cream makes me sick etc. I do nuts & avocados - is that classified as HF?

Advice would be welcome - thank you

Hi @melzee, the primary reason your glucose levels will rise, even if you don't eat, is that your metabolism is configured to use glucose as energy. In the event of a lack of glucose from foods, your body converts glycogen in the liver to glucose to give you that energy. This is often seen in the mornings as a point in time where you are more insulin resistant or your body is preparing for the day and effectively feeding you in the absence of food.

LCHF - fats can be any fats, so fats from nuts, avocados, salad dressings, oily fish, etc are all valid. Another classic is Bulletproof coffee using Coconut oil. it doesn't have to be fats from meats.

Hi,

Have a look at this video from Dr. Bernstein. You mention your BS is good in the morning, but rising during the day. If you are just taking a high basal dose before bed and none in the morning, then this video might help. Dr. Bernstein doesn't believe that the basal insulins last as long as the producers state.

It's a fairly well known fact that neither Lantus nor Levemir last for 24 hours in many people. It generally seems to be dose/kg of bodyweight dependent.

Wow! Thank you
So I'm on levemir - do any of you split your dose? Roughly 50:50?
It's defo worth a try.
