Hey everyone,
Anybody have any ideas whether it's normal for basal rates to vary depending on whether you eat or fast with an insulin pump? What I mean by that is that I was always told the advantage to the pump is that if you skip a meal for any reason, it's not a problem because as long as your basal rates are correct, your blood sugars won't rise or drop (like they often do if you're on MDI and miss a meal), but having had a lot of problems of unexplainable highs and lows, I'm wondering if the reason I can't work them out is that I'm ASSUMING the basal rates are right on days where I eat, because I KNOW that they're right on days where I fast.
I had 2 weeks of very regular testing and logging (incl with a CGM sensor for 6 days), where I wrote down activity levels, food intake and any other possible factor at times when my BG rose or fell. I did fasting days and eating days, and made sure my activity levels were the same for both so I could compare them reliably. On the fasting days, my basal rate is PERFECT. But on eating days, I always drop hours after food. And it's not 2 hours (or even 3), it's usually 4-5 hours after I've eaten that I'll randomly drop low, which makes me think my basal rates are too high... So I dunno I'm a little confused.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Sarah
