Basal insulin split dose units

I am concerned about the balance of taking my basal insulin. I split my basal insulin 8am and 8pm. I started with 7units am and 7 units pm. Over the years I have gradually changed to take 9units am and 5units pm. This was to stop night time hypo, but I'm not sure that this was the correct thing to do. I inject Lanctus and understand that it is supposed to work over 24 hours. Is it better to take equal amounts of basal insulin am and pm?
 
I was put on Lantus four years ago and I do one injection at 10pm every evening, my control is unbelievably good. Before that I was on Humulin I once a day in the evenings and my readings were awfull for twelve years.
Lantus, I was told by the specialist, is a once a day injection. If I go to bed with a reading of 7, I take my 14 units of Lantus and I awake with the same reading I went to bed with a 7. To find the right dose of Lantus I increased my dose by 1 unit untill I awoke with the reading I went to bed with. Lanyus works wonderfully for me.
 
Before i was on a pump i was taking 40 units of lantus at breakfast and 20 at bedtime so yours sound very small compared. Everyone has different needs though so go by what your DSN and docs say :)
 
I take 12.5 units of Lantus at 8.30 in the morning. When I was still experimenting with the dosage I tried splitting it and asked my consultant what he thought. He said that on low doses there isn't really any benefit to splitting it. Seems to work ok for me just once a day. But we're all different.

That sounds familiar - same insulin same issue. I also had to start adjusting my dosage to get the results I wanted when I first switched to Lantus. I fast often and have discovered this is much easier with Lantus. Over time I ended up decreasing my evening dosage by 10 units
 
Lantus sort of stopped working for me mind you that was after more than 20 years. I am now on levemir which seems better for me but I have to split the dose morning and evening, about 2/3 at night 1/3 in the morning. That seems to work for me. I found splitting lantus didn't help at all.
 
I take Lantus 25 in the morning. Just something about taking a shot of insulin and going to sleep didn't sit well with me. I tried Levemir and had to split that, Lantus worked better for me. At the VA they tell pts to take Lantus at bedtime. We have a LOT of Type 2's on Lantus/Novorapid. I just got switched to "generic" Lantus called Basaglar but haven't started up on it yet.
