Basal Rates

So my son is nearly one week into pumping and all is going well! We are doing lots of testing to try and get basal right. We were always led to believe that insulin requirements when pumping were less than MDi often by around 30%. We have kept on reducing his basal and now his total amount per day is just under 2 units compared to 8 units of levemir! I'm not looking for any advice but am just curious to know how much of a reduction other 'pumpers' have found they needed.

He is going to his first party this afternoon so it will be nice to 'zap' him with the remote rather than having to take him off to do his injection. Not to mention him being able be a little indecisive about what he wants to eat as I can keep on bolusing!

Leggott, I'm so pleased to hear that the first week has gone well. We also tested a lot during the first few weeks, particularly the first few days. You will feel shattered but once those basals are correct the full night's sleep is wonderful! I know you were in a similar situation to how we were with Jess in the night.

Jess' basal didn't drop quite as much as your son's but we've gone from 10 units of Levemir down to about 6 units of basal per 24 hours.

Hope he enjoys the party, the pump will be fantastic for that sort of event.

Thanks Sophia. We are so pleased with the pump. It has been a hard week, but I know we will reap the rewards once we've fine tuned everything.

I would never go back to MDI and I can say that quite confidently after 6 days!

Hi,

good to hear it's going well!

I was on 32 units of lantus, (spilt 14/18) i'm now on 22 units total per day. but i'm still tweaking here and there as i'm trying to combat rising high in the morning. My ratio's throughout the day hae also dropped too.

It's great having a remote with your pump isn't it :) hope he has a great time!

When I swapped over to the pump, I was on 19 units of levimer (8/11) I'm got 3 basal profiles set up, lowest is 7 units and the highest is 10 units..

I also found a differnce in bolus insulin used but this may have been purely that because I'm sensitive to insulin meant with being able to dose exactly what I require I don't over dose with having to inject a min of 1 unit..

I wouldn't willingly go back to MDI injections
