Basal reduction

Hi,
I've been a type 1 for 35 years. I've always believed I had great control with always getting good hba1c but after eventually getting a cgm this year I've realised I must have always been getting high and low spikes.
The cgm data led me to finding this low carb forum. I've massively reduced my carb intake over the last couple of weeks which has greatly improved my post meal spikes.
I have interestingly found that my basal (lantus) requirements have reduced significantly. I was taking 26 units at 8pm and I am now down to 16 and still finding it dipping during the night with my alarm going off every few hours. I think I could end up being on around 10 units.

Is.this normal?
Thanks

needles, bloods sampling, infact most medical stuff which usually result in panic/anxienty attacks :(
Regards dips I've found CGM constantly has read lower for me have u checked Vs finger prick to see ? Could be compression lows which is a other possibility. I've recently reduced basal toujeo 18 to 15.. eating less carbs than used to nova rapid also changed ratio. I am more active than was could be combination.. I'd trust finger pricks over the CGM

DISCLAIMER : - None of what follows constitutes medical advice. I am just making conversation !

Have you ever tried taking Lantus in the morning ? Or splitting the dose?
I used to be a Lantus user (now Levemir) and I experimented with different things including taking it at different times.
Interestingly, experimenting with the CGM, it was easy to tell when the Lantus was wearing off, With a 19:00hrs injection my glucose levels would start to rise at about 15:00 next day - it never lasted 24hrs.
If I took it in the morning at 07:00 then CGM was recording a rise in blood glucose starting around 03:00 next day.
This is what led me to try splitting the dose. For me it was definitely more successful up to the point where I started to experience side effects, at which point I was switched to Levemir which is a twice a day insulin anyway.

I am duty bound to advise you to discuss any changes you make with your doctor / medical team beforehand.

Regards
Urb

Not being on holiday....
My Neighbour and i have 100 years of type 1 diabetes between us and both have excellent hba1c.
He is 75 and i am 57 years old.

He uses 7 units of lantus at 6pm and novorapid as and when.
I use 10 units of levimir at 6am and 14 at 6pm, and novorapid as and when.

One size does not fit all.

I wish you well

Tony

Thanks for your replies.

I use the libre 3 and have found the accuracy to.be pretty good.
I have always taken the lantus at around 8pm after being guided to take a little bit extra novarapid with my evening to allow for the last few hours tail off. I did try splitting the doses earlier this year but my levels became erratic and I also struggled to remember to take the injections with my hectic lifestyle.

Urban racer - can I ask what side effects are common with lantus?
