i need to shed 20 pounds off left, i already know about exercise, I exercise 40 min. 5 times a week. But whenever I eat meats I feel too tired for work outs and want to stop but when ever I eat healthy that day i can run the whole way through. So my question is should i become a vegetarian because it could have health benefits, give me energy, like would there be any health risks at all

Hi and welcome to the forum. Do you have diabetes? What do you eat with the meat?

There are healthy and unhealthy vegetarian diets just as there are healthy and unhealthy omnivorous diets, so it does not automatically follow that you will feel healthier.

used to be vegetarian and never ate any meat but now eat white meats and fish... I do not however have to think about the animal being killed else I can not eat it at all.:mask:

It depends on if you (or someone else) actually cooks from fresh. If you're thinking of going for vegetarian ready meals it possibly won't do you too much good. What you need to watch on a vegetarian diet is the carbohydrate levels and making sure you gt enough protein from other sources. I'm sure if you have a look ons somewhere like Amazon you could find a good diabetic cook book or look on this website, there are lots of diabetic friendly recipes.

I was veggie a long time ago. I don't think I could be now. I've had to cut out so many of the things I ate then because they make me ill in one way or another.
- had lunch in the staff canteen in work today. We were late so not much left. I don't really know what I ate but there didn't seem to be meat in it, although there were definitely chickpeas and possibly lentils. Didn't have anything carby with it but I feel really rough this evening. I hate the thought of eating bits of creature, but I don't see much alternative. :(

Chickpeas and lentils are fairly carby in their own right even without carb dishes on the side. I enjoy them in smaller doses these days. Hope you are feeling better today :)

Hi Shaniking.
I am on a vegan type diet, not because of the animal cruelty etc; Things have got so much better with regard to weight and good control without medication.
Must be fair to say that all my family present great looking and tasty meals which is part of the secret to stay on this vegan type diet.

Whatever you decide, there is no harm trying the veggie route. I personally believe that "Avocado Sevenfold's" Low carb/high fat vegetarian diet has got to be great start for many diabetics to improve their health.
:):):)

I am a veggie and was fighting to lose weight Im type 2 I have cut carbs and to start lost lots of weight (about a stone) but now I have plateaued my morning levels were high but now cant cut anything else out of my diet breakfast is yogurt and berries. dinner is salad and fish or eggs as I dont eat meat and nothing in between. I have just started eating a biscuit or fruit before bed and my morning levels have dropped from 9+ to 7/8 I feel this is an improvement. I also test my levels 6 to 8 times a day. Just need to find a way to get the weight down

Yes thank you Avacado sevenfold, I am feeling better today. :)

So, what sort of things would you eat as a vegan to keep blood sugar down?

On my vegan diet I eat every food that vegans have, but I do not add or take sugar ( only what comes naturally ).
It is a bit of a bonus that I dont have a sweet tongue.:yuck:
I just keep a eye on my BG meter and dont appear to have a problem,(touch wood).

Found this on Google which may help:
A meta-study conducted at the University of Cinncinnati found that 12-week vegan diets resulted in 12 to 27 percent lower fasting blood sugar levels and promoted weight loss in patients with Type 2 diabetes. HgbA1c levels - a measure of blood sugar over a three-month period prior to the tests - were also lower on a vegan diet. The researcher concluded that a vegetarian diet is more effective than a conventional diet for managing diabetes.

As a diabetic I feel that there are too many things I cannot eat if I want to keep my bs within sensible ranges that no way would I limit my diet even more. And don't forget, things like meat, fish, shellfish are low in carbs and can be high in protein, whereas many vegetables like potatoes, parsnips and rice, or fruit like bananas or grapes are very high carb. Protein sources for vegetarians, such as lentils or chick peas, are usually high carb, Vegetarianism or veganism are not good options for diabetics. And as for the meta study quoted by Izzzi, I would treat this information warily. Look up the definition of meta study and you will find there's an awful lot of room for wishful thinking in a meta study.
