Type 1 Bedtime Blood Sugar Levels

Hi all,

I just wanted to see what blood sugar reading you feel comfortable going to bed with?

I was recently told by a nurse at my doctors surgery to aim between 10 and 11 as I usually go to bed between 6.5 and 8.5 and consistently wake up at 18. The nurse suggested I was having hypos in my sleep and the liver doing it’s magic is what is causing the high morning readings.

I am planning to get a Libre sensor so I can see what is happening overnight but was curious what others do and if this was standard advice from the nurse?

Thanks in advance!

Hi @empink ,

A Libre would be a great idea to help spot trends during the night & any other time between meter tests.

However. It may not always be the liver "doing it's magic." (As your nurse suggests.) sometimes the liver can waive its wand after perfect figures on waking but an hour's run about prepping for work with "nil by mouth.?" But my experience only drives BGs up by a couple of Mmols

What insulin are you prescribed?

& my advice when planting a sensor. Inside the arm. There is a tendency to sleep on it when located on the outside which could give a "false low" reading on the graph when scanned with the pressure? ("Compression low.")

Hi Jaylee,

Thanks for your answer!
I am on Levemir and Novorapid insulin and take the Levemir as a split dose. Hoping the Libre will show any patterns and help find a solution... Appreciate the placement advice!

FWIW I aim for 5, but I do have the benefit of all the tech - CGM with alarms, pump, and I’ve joined the two together to talk yo each other and make adjustments automatically throughout the night. I did aim for 5-6 when still on injections when I first got Libre. I used to put my Libre on my upper chest as it didn’t knock on things there.
