Bedtime Drinks?

I used to have a sugary hot chocolate at bedtime in the winter and a flavoured milkshake in the summer. I immediately changed my hot chocolate to a diet version which is only 4g carbs per mug. I've been trying to find a low carb milkshake alternative now for this hotter weather, and I keep arriving at expensive Atkins low carb, high protein shakes. Would these be ok for me or does anyone have a quick easy recipe for a low carb chocolate milkshake?

Not before bed, but I sometimes enjoy Crusha NAS milkshake mix in Lactofree milk. Lactofree (Whole) is 2.8g carbs per 100ml.

Thank you for your suggestion, I had visions of mixing cream and water and cocoa powder half asleep at bedtime! This sounds much simpler! :)

IMG_0454.PNG Ha ha! Thanks for your suggestions, I think I've come up with a solution. Unsweetened Alpro almond milk and NAS Crusha!

I stopped having a warm drink of any sort after diagnosis. Once I've had a cuppa after my evening meal that's me (apart from water) until next day.

I've stopped a lot of things so far, I'll try and keep this last vestidge of my 'before diabetic life' if I can get away with it! My blood sugar readings have been in the 5s when I wake up now following a diet hot choc so I'll see what this does.

Late night dash to our 24 hour Tesco, I've bought, Raspberry, Vanilla and Chocolate NAS Crusha, plus some unsweetened Alpro Almond milk. Now I can have a completely carb free raspberry or vanilla shake or a chocolate one for less than one carb. I'll let you know what it tastes like in the morning!

Sounds good! I'm missing a before bed drink as well so I'll be interested in what you think about it.

I did try hot chocolate made with double cream, water and good choc powder but for some reason it kept me awake and the texture was a bit weird.

I had a chocolate one last night and it was pretty good. The milk wasn't that cold as I bought longlife so it wasn't in the fridge long before I made it. I think with properly chilled milk it'll taste even better. Going to try a different flavour tonight :)

Why not make the hot choc early and let it go cold?
Ah, now I tried that, the powder settled to the bottom as it cooled then wouldn't disperse again even with a good stir, so the drink was a bit clumpy! :depressed:

Those Crusha mixes are still quite carby at 8-9g per serving. More than I would have especially quite soon after being lower carb. I do understand what you mean about giving up things but I find it has been easier to concentrate on the nice things I can have rather than what I no longer consume. How about a de-caff (if you don't want caffeine) iced coffee with some double cream before bed? I have my coffee with 2 tablespoons of double cream which has only 0.8g of carbs.

They are if you make them with normal milk, but the actual NAS syrups contain little or no carbohydrates. I will consider an iced coffee to try too as I do like coffee, it'd have to be decaf at bedtime though!

Oops my bad.. I saw the per portion but didn't see that their "portion" includes the milk. Apologies
Does it taste very sweet?

I would also think it useful to look at what the syrup is sweetened with Some artificial sweeteners cause similar insulin ( not glucose ) spikes as sugar - the theory is that these are bad as they can feed insulin resistance.
On a completely different note one of the funniest experiments I saw on artificial sweeteners was that students drinking vodka and diet coke were 27% more ****** than another group of students drinking the same amout of vodka but with full sugar coke! - Wish id known that when I was a student!

No worries, I'm feeling like my Maths O Level (showing my age there!) is coming in handy in recent weeks!

These syrups are sweetened with aspartame and acesulfame. Is there a way to tell if they are causing insulin spikes? I'm keeping artificial sweeteners to a minimum, I have never been that keen on them.
Love the funny research you found, though I have been teetotal for years, so at least I'm not trying to fit alcohol into this new lifestyle!
