I tested my blood before bed last night and it was 15, I then injected 12 units of novorapid to try to bring it down, it's just guess work! This morning my bs was 10 I was hoping the amount I took before bed would have brought it down more. I've never been told about taking extra insulin before, I've only read it on here. Any ideas what amount I should have taken?

That's one hell of a dose to take before bed Sarah, how much does 1 unit of insulin usually bring your bg levels down by?

I have no idea! It doesn't seem to have brought it down much though. I'm guessing by your reply I should know this already if so how would I work that out?

To work out your correction factor you need to use the 100 rule, what you do is divide 100 by your TDD (Total Daily Dose) taking into account your basal and bolus insulin, so for my own it would be 100 divided by 34 which is 2.94, so in effect 1 unit of corrective insulin will bring my bg down by 3mmol, the 100 Rule is just a guide so do keep this in mind.

I see your a type 2 Sarah so not sure if the 100 rule works the same, perhaps someone more knowledgeable may enlighten you.

Thanks but how do you know things like that, just reading on here or diabetic appts? I've never heard of the 100 rule. I feel as though I've been diabetic quite a while I really don't know anything!

This is a very high dose of fast acting insulin you are taking just before bed. Is the blood glucose a one off or do you have a regular high BG before bedtime.if you do try splitting your background insulin to 2 injections a day. If you don't normally have this high BGs you may have miscalculated your tea time portions and not injected enough fast acting insulin. I've found that if you drink a couple of teas or coffees in the evening my sugar levels do shoot up. But according to DAFNE tea and coffee should not affect your sugar levels. Hope this helps you. Ian.

Yes my bs is not normally that high when I go to bed! I hadn't obviously not taken enough with my tea. As I've said before it didn't bring my bs down much at all tho which I don't understand? I only have 1 cup of tea with sweetener after my tea and then nothing till the morning.
