Hi again,
For several days earlier this week both my wife & I had a 'tummy bug' (no further description required) which put us both off our food for several days...We've both (unintentionally) lost about 5lbs due to this...(My weight now is under 9 & a half stone :( )
I'm a type 2,my wife is 'normal' ...
Last evening, (Friday) was the first 'proper' evening meal that we have had for days and so, this morning, for the first time this week, I tested...
(Fasting) Result 6.0
Then I had my usual breakfast, 'spoon-size shredded wheats' with semi-skimmed milk + small amount of 'splenda'...
Tested before lunch, Result 5.7

Just tested ...Following an evening meal with more 'carbs' than normal, so slightly high reading...Result 9.7

I'm still trying to control my Bg by 'diet' and hopefully I've got some lower readings that I'm happy with. :)

Just thinking, though, If I had started my medication last weekend, I would have been blaming the Metformin for this weeks' tummy problems...

Sorry to hear you've been rough.
Good to hear you able to eat a proper meal again and you both can return to 'normal'
Regards

Shredded Wheat is NOT a good breakfast for a diabetic despite what Ian Botham might say about it being healthy and having no added sugar it is very, very high in carbohydrate.

If you want to control your diabetes by diet alone you should stay well clear of Shedded Wheat whether full size or bite sized.

Carbs per 100g of Bite Sized Shredded Wheat = 69.9g!!!
Thats a huge amount of carbohydrate, even the recommended serving of 45g contains 31.5g of carbs which is a lot to deal with at breakfast time when most T2's are most insulin resistant.

Nutritional info taken from http://www.weightlossresources.co.uk/ca ... tesize.htm

I would strongly advise an alternative breakfast if you want to stay medication free.

Hi Sid, Thanks for that info and the link...I would normally (for breakfast) have a SINGLE weetabix + a 'few' bite-size shredded wheat, or a SINGLE weetabix with some slices of banana...Looking at that link, I notice that they suggest that ONE serving would be 2 weetabix.

Although, as you say, the 'carbs' in the breakfast that I'd eaten were high, my reading at 2 to 3 hours later was a reasonable 5.8
Perhaps it could have been even lower?

You realise that that is the amount recommended by the people who make and sell the stuff not a diabetes specialist, but if you can eat that amount and get away with it then brilliant, but most T2's on diet alone can not.

Hi folks
i totaly agree with sids post .You may may think cerial is ok however its actualy one of the most contraversial foods available the reason being solely down to the way it is advertised. Take sids advice as he has lots of experiance and grey hair
Only joking sid really knows his stuff :D

Hi again...
I don't think that I actually contradicted Sid in my previous post...

I said that my breakfast, used to consist of a SINGLE weetabix, which in 'carb' terms (according to the link) would be 11.6gr (Half the suggested serving of TWO, a total of 23.2gr.)

So, Sid, with respect, I never said that I could, or would, eat TWO... :o

Hence my comment that had I had my 'single' weetabix instead of those bite-size shredded wheat, my reading could have been even lower!

I hope that explains what appears to have been a misunderstanding. :)

Regards, Malc.
